I rarely ever use 38. For local rag chewing you'll usually find me on 36 or 37 LSB. If DX is rolling most of the locals around my area are on 27.370 MHz.

If it's really that congested in your area you need to consider getting some funnies installed in your radio and start going upstairs a little (27.415-27.495 or so). And install a slider in your radio and go down/up 5kc's. You'll find allot of good quality QSO's on all of them eventually...and DX you didn't think even possible! Heck, several years ago I used to have daily contacts with the same stations around lunch time on the East Coast in my mobile on 27.480 MHz. It was like talking local and tons of fun. You'll find even 100w will get the job done quite well when you aren't having to compete with with everyone running 1kw or more...not to mention the splatter from AM.

But just remember, 'moderation' and 'good clean audio' is the key and you'll likely not have any problems.

Indeed it has been quite busy. I rarely use 38lsb because most of the time the're just too many stations and it's almost impossible to have a decent conversation. I usually try on 37lsb and 39lsb. I don't understand why more people don't spread out over 37, 38, and 39lsb. I'm amazed how 38lsb get so overcrowded and 38 and 39 are so quiet.

I did find a few on 36 37 today and sometimes do call on 38 and qsy hard though if running tubes but I don't think 2 or 3 channels hurts your tune much. Time to put the export in the log truck. And I have the kilowatt.

Back in 1977 when the 40 channel radios came into existence SSB tried to take the upper frequencies over, channels 36 to 40 and it did work for awhile but when CB dropped off the AM'ers started taking them over. Channel 38 is the last stronghold for us SSB'ers.

Funny, when all that happened the top 5 frequencies were dedicated for sidebanders before the 40 were allocated. I remember that well because those of us limited to channel 16 (the only sideband channel at the time) were frothing at the mouth waiting for the change...as the amount of people on 16 was pretty thick. My first DX contact was on 16 LSB in fact. But the AM'ers haven't taken over...they try but all the more reason to have a slider. A guy can slide 5kc's down/up and not hear the AM'ers at all...yet the AM'ers will be struggling to hear. The FCC was hoping sideband would take hold more because the bandwidth required is allot less than AM.

Thus those of us who opted to freeband.

I know there is a type of gentlemans agreement about this but I dont understand pileing up on one place when theres 40 ch avaliable. Well once you get away from 6 you may have 35 or so. both sidebands are pretty quiet round 14,15,16,17, and 23,24,25,26,and 31,32,33,34,35,36,39,40. mabyee if theese got used more they would make more ssb rigs. a new uniden 890 is a heck of a lot cheaper than a hf rig or a export rig. I do enjoy am as well wish it was a little cleaner so you could hear enough to make more am contacts. Its really neat when I can go to ham fest and buy up the old am only cb for real cheap, bring em home peak em, and make contacts with em. Im a ham too and its real sad when I can do the same thing with a 15 dollar radio and a small amp that I can do with a $900 dollar Icom. Contesters and nets have taken over hf and its all about 5-9 reports. at least with my $15 dollar cb, When I make a contact the other guy will qso for a minute or two. We should spread out more on ssb. Just think a old 23ch ssb being worth something again.

especially the frequencies ending in"0" there are fewer radios that can hit these freq's so much less noise
i talked to italy with 10watts on 27.420 usb.

Not sure really. USB since it's been around is the quietest mode of all. Seldom used in America. Canada and England use it frequently. Thus, any DXing on USB is a hoot reaching a contact this way. ch35USB was a common Canadian Maritime and England contact in the early morning hours on the weekends.

38 lsb was active almost all day yesterday here in New Orleans,LA.....picking up stations in Northern CA, NC too and it sounded like a stationn in Puerto Rico possibly.

Skip is unpresidented for this late in the solar cycle, I'm enjoying it while I can. The last couple days "Red Fox" has been tying up 38 so I've been on 39. Listen for 321, middle of Maryland, that's me.

Yer right! 38lsb was skipping wild today, but I couldn't get a word out edgewise! There's way too many "Big Boys" on there for any real DX'ing to go on. It's becoming the new "Bowl!". I heard folks from all around today, but couldn't make a single contact. Yes, I know that could be because of the conditions in my area, but with experience, I honestly think its because of the crowded conditions. The sheer amount of high power a-holes on the band. I test for my Technician next Saturday. I'll enjoy DX somewhere else. It has become a bit of a joke on CB now.

hey there 451, i think you should be hearin skip , cause i am , especially from MO and KS, AR, TX,IA,TN ,OH, NE ,WY,MS,LA GA,FL,NY,MN,IH,WA,CA,NV,AZ,OK, might be easier to say where it wasn't coming from,
it is sporadic at times but lately has been all day, this last 12 days for sure.
Saterday,May 20th, was worse than a trainwreck, if thats even possible,
i would say if your not hearin it, you got to do some tuning or adjusting,
at times all the upper channels were ablaze.
