Make sure you have run java scripts enabled. It's under the advanced tab in internet options.

This needs to be checked if you have the most current version of java.

Use JRE 1.6.0_03 for <applet>(requires restart)

Then click apply and then click ok.

Restart the computer and try the chat room again.

Not sure what browser you are using so I am guessing IE. Try giving Firefox a shot. Its a better browser then IE 6/7 and most websites are totally Firefox compatible. Better security then IE too.

I can't get java to work on mozzila , what's up with that? No chat, just shuts down, also a couple other sites that I have to use IE for. Any fix for that?

In Firefox make sure that Enable Java and Enable JavaScript are enabled. Edit -> Preferences -> Content two boxes need to be checked. At least that is the path on firefox running on Centos. The Windows version might be a little different. Could be a firewall setting too.

I'm still having trouble as well. :( I have the latest version of java, cleared caches, closed/reopened browser, allowed TCP access on ports 8000 through 8009, checked setting under advanced tab (Use JRE 1.6.0_03 for <applet>(requires restart)), changed security setting to low, restarted computer (cold boot), etc. I've tried 3 different browsers (msn/ie7x/firefox) - Still no luck. Am I overlooking anything?

2 more things come to mind you might try... uhmmm check and see if you have allow all cookies enabled. And also, if your running a firewall just disable it long enough to see if it solves the problem for the moment. If it does maybe you just need to tweak the firewall a bit here or there. But I would not leave the firewall down for long and since lowering your security settings didn't seem to help you might want to put it back to at least the default setting. Are you running a router? You mentioned you opened the ports but you didn't mention whether you opened them in the firewall software or the router.

Being that I do not now the layout of your home network, is a NAT/hardware firewall in the picture, I would start where the services comes in. WAPs, linksys/netgear routers, etc have firewall rules in them that could prevent this function is enabled. If these are in the picture then give the settings in the firmware a look. I am running off a private network and do not have any problem with accessing the chat room on browsers running on OSX, Windows, or Linux. I'll see if I can think of any thing else.

First a question. Do you have Windows 2000 or Windows XP? they are two different operating systems. Both based on Windows NT but there are some major diff's.
Either way, go to windows updates and get the IE 7 upgrade and any security updates that go with it. No guarantee this will help but I have seen older versions of IE that just don't, won't work on some computers. I can't tell you why, but I have seen it happen over the years.
If you don't stand behind our troops, please feel free to stand in front of them.

Hi JR - My security software automatically blocks any outgoing/incoming data unless I grant it permission - then it will accept it automatically. I went in and manually added client.sigmachat.com w/ports 8000 through 8009 - that is what I was talking about. I also granted permission in my firewall configuration so it wouldn't get hung up there.

Hey WE - I'm running XP Pro/Media Center. I have my system set up to notify me whenever there is an OS or AntiVirus/Security update and always install them when available. :) I am a firm believer in keeping my system protected!

SUCCESS!!!! I went back in and started double checking all my settings (again) and discovered that the add-ons for Sun had been disabled in my browsers. I enabled them, restarted my browser and tried chat again. This time I got a sign in box (instead of a gray box w/red X), so I think that enabling the add-ons solved the problem! Thank you to all that replied with your suggestions - I appreciate it! :D
