Voltage Regulator??
I'm looking to pump up the volts to a 2x8.
I got the extra alt and the extra batteries, I know a voltage regulator has to go in here somewhere.
Any suggestions and or tips to this?

I think the Fatboy type voltage regulators are responsible for the field strength of the alt's. When you dial up a higher voltage the reg sends more voltage to the alt field forcing it to produce more output voltage. I know this is how most custom alt's work. If you have a one wire alt then this is all moot and I don't know how to regulate a one wire alt.

I got the money though, I'm just trying to get my ducks in a row before I buy

Trying to run a 18v set-up, the alternator was charging at over 21v's. (which is scary numbers!)Visegrip wrote:Why did you go back to 12v JJD?
Then decided to try a 16v set-up, which should have meant the alternator would be putting out around 18v's back to the batteries, which I would have been fine with, but for some reason the dang thing still wanted to charge at 21v's +...which literally Boils the batteries. (think I remember reading somewhere, where you can boil them @ over 15v's)
Never smoked any pill's @ those numbers, but I figured it would be only a mater of time....I Know too many guys around here that have....
So I decided if I wanted more watt's, I would just buy "Bigger"...

All alternators run at high Volt's! (not sure how many though) All the Regulator does, is "Regulate" the amount of volts you need to keep your battery (or batteries) charged...Usually a couple of volts over what the battery is rated at.So you have to have a alt that runs at a higher voltage and the regulator dials it down??
You can take any alternator, and change out the regulator so the alternator will charge what ever amount of volts you want...Say you have a 105 amp alternator, and your wanting to charge a 16v racing battery, then you need to either find a 18v regulator, or a ajustable regulator that you can set for 18v's....
If you take 3 6v batterys, and set them up for 18v's, you will need to be charging them @ around 20v's...
My problem was the regulators would work for a while, but then would go nut's and start over charging...The Alternator Shop seemed to think they were getting too hot, and screwing up...

Yep...When you get into "VOLTING", you better make sure you have all your Duck's in a Row!lonesome 500 wrote:just set up to run off a seperate system......don't touch the stock electrical
add 1 or 2 batts....
add a 250 or 300a with the internal reg at 15v......
then get the 12 pill.........like jjd ......volting kills.....if you make 1 mis step
Right Wiring to handle the power, and swr better be perfect!
