16 Volt System
Say you have a separate charging system in your vehicle
Can some run a 16v alt and battery?
If so has anybody ever tried it.

I think most people with separate charging systems run theirs at about 20v for their amps, but the cool thing is most have external voltage regulators where they can set their own voltage from inside the vehicle. As far as running it into the battery, I'm not sure. I think most run it strait from the alternator to the amplifiers.

I've tried it...What you need to do. Is have a separate charging system, with 4 8v golf cart battery's, or 2 16v Racing Batterys. (which run over $200 ea.)
What I had was a 200 amp Delco Alternator, which used a external regulator. Then I bought a Transpo 911 ajustable regulator to charge the batterie bank.
The idea was to set the regulator to charge at 18 to 19v's...But problems I ran into was the thing kept wanting to charge between 20 and 23v's!
which was way too high!
Not sure exactly what I was doing wrong, if anything, But if your planning on doing some volting, it's cheaper just to buy a Motor Maul, and do it that way!![Wink ](./images/smilies/icon/wink.gif)

Most people that run separate alternators for higher volts either run 16 volts with a battery bank consisting of 8 volts and 6 volts in series. Those who run 18 volts max use a battery bank of two 8 volt batteries in series.linx wrote:I think most people with separate charging systems run theirs at about 20v for their amps, but the cool thing is most have external voltage regulators where they can set their own voltage from inside the vehicle. The 20 volt guys use battery banks with 12 volt and 6 volt batteries in series.
All of the above applications require variable regulator(s).
