Battery -- to power my CB ?? Advice?

#152131

Post by Approach »

Can I connect my CB directly to a battery? For example, can I buy a car battery then set it behind my seat --- thus my CB is the only thing plugged into it?? Thus, the battery would not be connected to the car whatsoever? Is this adviseable?

Thanks,
Tom

When a battery is being charged or discharged it will release hydrogen sulphide gas which in large enough concentrations is explosive. not to mention corrosive at the same time. This is why they put the battery under the hood so it will have plenty of ventilation.
Thus the answer would be no, not really advisable. however, people do it every day with no "bad" consequences so the choice is yours. all I am doing is telling you what "could" happen, not what "will" happen.

That would be your absolutely cleanest power source, but that cell (battery) would become dead after some amount of keydown. A motormaul would solve that by having that auxilliary battery in your backseat aaaaaand still get charged up from your electrical system.

I would seriously consider what Pro 151 said. He is right on the money.

I have known folks that run strait batteries in their shacks for years, and it has worked, but it could have long term damaging effects.

You can run a dual charging system if you have room under your hood for a second battery. You will also need an isolator to charge both batteries on one alternator available at your local parts store.

If spilling or gassing from a battery is an issue for you, then get an AGM battery, because they cant spill and they capture their own gasses.

But I am unsure of why you cant connect directly to the car battery under the hood, and just use that.
