Predator 10K v Wilson 5000

#16408

Post by Phaze91460 »

I can just imagine what posistions y'all will take on this but here is the guestion.

Like many people, I want to spend as little as I can but get the most I can. I will never run more than 1000 watts, I will never compete ( with radios anyway ), so is there a real advantage for me to buy a Predator 10k and mount it to my ladder rack or buy a wilson 5000 and mag mount it to my roof. Will I get enough TX / RX to even be able to tell the difference ?

I haven't decided what radio yet and I know that will be a factor but I am leaning twards the Connex 4600.

I forgot who I asked this of, but the basic answer I got was that if I'm not shooting skip and running high power, the difference is negligible.

i wouldn't buy it unless you plan on running high power. i run a 10k. and i love it. i do shoot a lot of skip but i have shot a lot of skip off a wilson 1000. i owuld just buy the wilson antenna. butthere is a differance in reccive. i notice a difference as soon as i turn on my radiio with the 10k. just my 2 cents

I run a Wilson 5000 and it's a great antenna, but the 10K is obviously better. If you are going to buy that Connex 4600 I would say get the 10K. If you are going to get the best radio you might as well do it justice with the best antenna. I always figure that the antenna is the most important part of any setup.

I was thinking about replacing my 5000 waith the 10K.I wonder what the 10K would look like on the roof of a 93 Bonniville? :Peace!:

10K vs wilson 5000! 10K anyday! BUT MAKE SURE YOU GET THE RIGHT ONE, a wilson 5000 mag will outperform the 10K IF you use the wrong one!

Well, The real question is will I be able to tell the difference ? Its one thing to be able to hook up gauges and say yup, 10K is better, its another to be able to tell live in real time on the radio.

Ummm let me clarify, "better" yes difference with the right one. 22" pr 27" shaft on a roof works awesome, and theres a huge difference. HOWEVER again, the wilson 5000 mag mt is a great antenna. I use one on some cars that I dont want to drill holes in. And it works great. But being a user of both, I talk much better on a 10K then a 5000.

So lets say someone just had to let go of $75. What size 10K would be best for a 96 Chevy Blazer? I got no amp (YET!!!) But this radio swings 225. Wold I be justified in buying a 10k?

Hey Ive talked tons and tons of skip on a 5000. I installed 9913 coax on one and used a 12 pill on it for along time. They talk phat! And they dont look as goofy on a car. Being Im married to a beautiful woman and dont need to find a date (lol) I can put up big ugly antennas that talk better!! LOL

On a roof you want a min of 22" 10K or 27" 10K

Any wattage range benefits from great gain antennas. Heck 225 watts is enough to talk anyplace you want!

Now is 27" the overall height on the antenna? Ive never actually taken a good close look at them! Hell, the Wilson is 62"! If that's the case, my minds made up!

27" just refers to the length of the shaft of the antenna. You can get the shaft in 9, 12, 17, 22, and 27 inches, as well as single and double coil.

On the 10K
The over all length will depend on how much you need to take off the end when tuning it.. I had to take well over a foot off the whip to get my swrs to 1.1..
I was going to purchase the 22in shaft with the extra flat side whip.. but my better half went & purchased me the 9in double coil for our anniversary..
(Wished you could get the flat side whip for the smaller shafts :'()

looking at it now tho,.. I do think the 22in would have been a little to tall with the roof mount I am running..
having to watch them low powerlines now..

Everyone else around here runs the wilson 5000.. & they shoot skip with ease...Both are good antenna's, but its a 10K WORLD!!!

So, MadHadder, How tall was the whip section when you started ? That will give me an overall length to start with.

About 7-7.5ft usually. But his answer was perfect depends on how they tune out.

Yea,
they give you plenty to work with,,.. It was very long. Took me forever to tune it.. bet I took ateast 2- 2 1/2 feet off of it if not more.....1/4 inch at a time too...in the rain...lol
Tuned total legth on my little 9in double coil is 5ft 7in long. tuned on a tri mag mount on the roof, It's about 1.1 on channel 1 and 1.3 on channel 40...

Think I will get one of the 22in shafts too & try mounting it to the tool box..
Like that flat side tip! Looks like a good skip shooter!!

But my vote would be for both,...
I would recommend the 10K if them big pretty skip shootin antenna's don't bother you stuck out on the roof of your car/truck....

If your going with a low profile simple look go with the wilson 5000,..
