I have used Foxhunter on AM for a long time. I am fairly big into AM and like it's challenges. For AM DXing & SSB I use 351

I do go down occassionally to SSB with some guys around here on 27.385 LSB which is CH.38 AM. You don't know who you'll bump into using this alternative to the AM mode. Some of those you meet & talk with are quite different. I plan on using SSB more frequently when the skip does begin heating up. I use any and all channels and don't stick to a "set" home frequency. Though I do talk local in the area here, I am much more interested in DX than local. I just want to make contacts as far away as possible.

Some may know this already, but if not, one will find that in many areas that "the Sideband crowd" is much different from "the AM crowd". SSB'ers often are much more like Ham Radio guys in the protocols used. They don't use the "10-Codes" hardly and instead use an abbreviated version of the Ham Radio "Q-Codes". The operators on there are more into conversation and contacts than all the chaos found on AM. Not a hard & fast rule, but often that is more the norm. Still, I've heard some very unusual and outlandish SSB transmissions from out of who-knows-where. Strange, interesting and of unknown origin.

Just one more thing or two about Sideband frequencies. They'll call them frequencies and not channels. But for ease of typing here, traditionally SSB'ers used Channels 15 through 18 in the days of 23-Channel CB's. In the newer era of 40-Channel CB's, the channels of 31 through 40 are most often used. Some "diehards" from the older days will still hang out on 16.

New to sideband. Why do you guy use numbers instead of your usual handle on SSB?

In response to laylow's question, its been a tradition for many years to use call numbers. I like to log my DX contacts, and its a lot quicker to write their number number and qth(location) down than writing down their handle, especially if you're in the middle of a pileup and you're logging and making contacts at the same time.

27.385, 27.395 and 27.405 of the regular 40, with 38 LSB being the "home" sideband channel. When skip really rolls, I'll click up to 27.505 and 27.555, and a few others in the vicinity to monitor conditions. I go by "Three Four Two -- Central Georgia" Can't wait to hear from you!

Sideband is usually an escape from the crazies on AM. I use 35-40 LSB, and also upper freqs on the LSB. The 721 out of Louisville Ky. waving a hand!

New to sideband. Why do you guy use numbers instead of your usual handle on SSB?

Unit numbers date back to early days of CB radio.BAck then cb was used by businesses,and some were licensed to use frequencies above the 23 channels.These users id'd the mobiles with unit numbers.When a regular CB'er would operate out of band he would id with a made unit number,in effort to convince listeners that he was allowed there.Over the years having a unit number has become as common as a Handle. And are prefered on ssb to be different than am stations.

I'm an am'er but often I'll get on 38 when the skip rolls and I make sure and use casual lingo. I avoid and don't respond to any Q codes or hammy sounding stations. I'll remind them they're on cb and the best part about ssb is that only a 1000 watts will make you a rock star on there. My 7 year old loves that channel. Nothing gets them going better than him on there making my dx1600 sing. They hate it, I love it. Maybe I need to put a delay on my bigger box so it can serve me on sideband. If I'm alone, I'll do my channel 6 guy impression, talking like an am'er on channel 38lsb and say I'm running my "low side boost", infuriating the ham wannabes. Nothing says I love you like a little ghetto talk on sideband, especially with 1200 watts. Imagine 3 times that, now that's what I call quality entertainment. If I want formal ssb conversation, I'll go to the ham bands. -drdx
