Wilson 5000
Wilson 5000
Ok guys, after much deliberation and price checking I've decided that the additional cost of buying a sturdy Mount for a predator 10k, or having one custom made for me locally is going to run me a good bit more than I am wanting to spend. So I've decided to drop a little performance wise and just go with the Wilson 5000 Rooftop Mount. I was just curious if anyone knows who would have the cheapest price around for it. Ordering Direct from Wilson would run 67.95, so if you know anyone that carries it for less let me know please.
The more I think about it I just can't validate spending 200+ just to set up a Predator when I can get a Wilson 5000 for 70 and not need to worry about any extra mount costs.

Glorfindil,
That is about the best price that I have found too. I would go for it.

Frankly I probably don't need what I want, just I have an 88 Chevy S-10 and want it roof mounted. I just don't know how much I trust that roof and with the kind of wind resistance that Predator would have I would want something like Mr coily's 1' Square roof mount for peace of mind that it's not goint to tear open a hole in my roof.
Another Question
One more thing I'm wondering about the Wilson 5000 Roof Mount version. does anyone here know if that comes with the PL259 connector or if it just has the cable connection point for a manual wireing?
I know of a CB shop that pushes the Wilson 1000 roof mounts to a bunch of happy customers. The 5000 is supposed to be a step up, but I don't know if the additional mass is worth it, and I doubt the difference would be noticeable.
Either way, 1000, or 5000 roof mounts, I think you'll be very happy with the performance on your truck. It also lines up well with antenna theory too.
That's the direction I would have gone if I would be willing to make the hole.

Glorfendill,
I did some SWR testing with a Wilson 1000 mag mount on the cab center of my S-10 pickup today, and I was very impressed. The through the roof mount should get similar results.
I think the Wilson 5000 does come with larger coax than the 1000, and either one could be changed out to high quality mini 8 if needed. I think they require their stock coax length.

I just looked at the Wilson Web Site, and I saw that the "star washer" and coax assembly appears to be in the parts list. This is a consumer level antenna, and I doubt they would market it without the coax.
Also, earlier in this thread RA mentioned "yup" on the PL-259 question.
Call your supplier to be sure what he is selling you, and I think you'll like the news. I found a price of $62.99 at a wholesale warehouse place, but they are less than the best on customer service. The place your dealing with may easily treat you better if parts begin to multiply or divide during installation.
They have recently changed over to a cool looking two part PL-259 at the radio end that makes it easier to route the coax without soldering. You may want to avoid the older models that have been sitting on someones shelf for 5 years or more, because some of the earlier models had a fairly cheap crimp on PL-259 connector.
The parts kit also includes a plastic cap so that you can unscrew the coil and whip for a car wash, and cover the connection point with the plastic cap.
Don't be to surprised if you don't need to tune it much. Maybe an inch or less. If it's anything like the Mag Mount versions that I have tried on my truck and car.
I had to swallow hard as I gradually cut off 12 inches or more on my Predator 10K whip.
