heh, I was looking at the Magnum Reverb kit. only 20 bucks and I can make this sound like a magnum, not bad.

anyhow, I am hoping for atleast 15w pep with a 2w DK so I have plenty of swing into the amp im going to order.

Me thinks sometimes its best to just read and then not say anything. But I guess I can't resist.

Where is it you are talking to that you have to have so much power to talk to. I have talked all over the world, mostly barefoot using my 134 and 148. I guess what I am saying is that if you can hear them why can't you talk to them without all that power. It just seems as if these new radios can't hear or they swing a lot but don't have the modulation to go with it or something.

Sorry, old man / old school here.

My 148 is an OLD-OLDer model, stock mic and everything. It's the only decent radio I own and since I don't really have the money for a good amp it's the only choice out of what I got.

I've tried some different mics on it but it seems that the stock sounds the best IMO.

Everyone says I sound loud and clear even barefoot. On a busy day on 19 I can still get out a good ways without someone stomping on me completely.

backward swing

#166558

Post by Bartender »

I find it interesting that no one has yet commented on the fact that his 148 GTL is swinging BACKWARDS. Anyone here have any info on that? I was just wondering the other day about that. Is backward swing something someone will do to get a big deadkey or what? What's the point of a radio that swings backwards?

Quality wise, on the side mic ones with only 4 switches across the top, they are hard to beat. The knobs and switches feel head and shoulders above most others. -drdx
For a relatively low swing radio they are about the loudest talkers out there.

Its funny this thread should come up. I just had my 148 aligned, as it was off freq. a little on sideband. I also had my tech add variable power to it so I can have more control from the front of the vehicle, as the amps are in the back. I found that the main reason I wasn't running it was that my other radio has the variable. The ears and quality are so clearly above my other newer units that I may just have to prowl the market and get a couple more for the closet. -drdx
Yes it's me, Dollar-98, drdx, the original all maul, shot cawla on workin this no-fade technology.

The old style five pin Cobra148GTL if tuned the right way no volted finals or any scam mods can swing 30Watts PEP very easy and be just as loud as a General Lee or Galaxy you just have to find the right Tech that knows the radios.
All radios tuned by the best me.

The side mic 148s are probably the best mobile, single final radios of all time.
The front mic 148s are just an average radio at best.

DrDx,
Funny, I just looked on eBay before I saw this post, there a few Philippines made 148 and 2 Uniden Grant XL worth a look.

SilverStreak,
Who would you send the radio to if you need one done? You may reply in PM if you wish.

Backward swing is usually due to an amp being over driven! Don't know for sure if that is the case with your radio? What type of meter are you using that is suggesting backward swing?

I had my "new" 148 tuned by sparky's he also bumped up the receive. On the swing I'm getting between 20-25
watts. So it can be done. The receive job he did made a huge differance.

I would have to say that the 148 that I have has not experienced any drift at all. When I am talking to someone on SSB, once I have the clarifier dialed in, I have a good stable contact with the other operator
