Ground Plane....maybe....any help would be nice???????

#21880

Post by Snowman1975 »

I found this ground plane for a mobile antenna that I can pick up for around $20.00 or so. It measures about 8" to 8 1/2" across and screws into a standard 3/8" 24 thread mount (just like what I have on my van with my Cobra 1000). My question is, would this help with my existing antenna at all or would I be fine with what I have? I am not planning on pumping any big watts or anything in the near future....just looking to improve my present set-up. Is this worth the $20.00 I have available or should I just save my money and forget this thing?

Any suggestions, help, or advice would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

Next quick question....is it worth $20.00? Or, is there somewhere else I can get it cheaper? That $20.00 includes shipping.

Cool. Thanx. Yeah, the cost is $11.99 + 7.95 shipping...the dealer is questionable but I will deal with them on a personal basis. I don't want to slander anyone. Thanx for the input.

I have a friend who is a trucker, bought one on ebay. never could get his SWR set with it on, said his TX RX was not so good.

He said it didnt even make a good frisby when he through it after removing it.

Hear say so, doe no but he dont have a reason to tell stories. I was lookin at it on ebay before.

I might just hold off for a little while anyway. Thanx for the help and the info. I think I'll just save up and maybe get a new radio in a couple months...one that is from someone either on here or one of the sponsors.

snake oil

The whole point of mounting your antenna to a metal body is the metal ground acts as a mirror of the antenna.

plus, ground plane radials are 1/4 wave long ~102-103"

Falkon, what exactly are you saying? Is this a good deal or not? Or, should I just save my money for a new radio or whatever?

what he is saying is, by its design ... it will not work or make any difference for you

As in Spend money = For nothing = not a good deal

Thanks for clearing that up. I guess I'll just save for a bigger better radio.

Snowman,

Those ground planes are to an antenna what most fishing lures are to fish! They catch more people!!!!

I fell for one of those and can tell you , they will do you absolutely no good what so ever. Save your money for better equipment. You'll be a lot happier in the long term.

:Peace!:

I appreciate everything you guys have said. Like I said, I think I'll just wait for a couple months and get all new equipment.

Agree..."Snake-Oil". Only thing that those thing's are guaranteed to do, is screw-up your swr. Have had several different versions of them, one that go's on Monkey Mades, which looks like something off a wagon wheel. And have yet to ever see one do anything, other that maybe catch bird's!

Also, wont even make a decent throwing star!
