Which one?

#22906

Post by dalonzi »

I am going to set up my mobile but I am having trouble deciding which radio I want. I know I want the loudest I can get but I really want a good receiver too. I can probably live without ssb in the mobile but it would be a nice option to have. I have no plans on running an amplifier in the mobile at this time. I am trying to choose between a

Connex 4600 Turbo
Galaxy 95T ( heard the receive is not that good, Noisy)
Galaxy 99V
Galaxy 88
magnum S9
I know one thing though. I will purchase from Radioactive radio.

Thanks for any help you can give me in deciding

I just got a new Galaxy 95T and the receive is excelent. Not that noisy either. RadioActive did an awsome job setting it up for me.

I have the (bad) tendency to look at radios from features and benifits from the outside (i.e. S-meter visibility, knob adjustments, etc.). I'm probably not the smartest of students in the class for that. :-? However, Mr. RA looks at them from the inside out...which maybe between the two will help narrow down the playing field some for you?

That will be my plan in the future. I've found him to be quite helpful and friendly, and wish past purchases could have included him. :-x Live and learn I suspose. Personally I use both SSB and AM about the same amount. And I try and set up my systems with the intent to load up the antenna. That way it's no biggy to add it should I change my mind down the road.

But it sure sounds like you have a good initial plan though. :Peace!:

I have the 4600 turbo and all I can say is WOW ! Ya know, this is a hard question to get an answer to because all of these are good radios. The 95T and the 4600 are going to be your most powerful as they have amps built in but the bottom line is that you have to decide what features you really want now and in the future. Then make a pick on a radio that has those features.

I didnt want ssb on my mobile as I will never use it there. I also wanted the echo adjustable on the front of the radio. I did not want to add a seperate amp to boost power so I got the 4600 which did all that.

The 95t has adjustable echo but its inside the radio which means you have to open the case to change it.

The other radios didnt have the built in amps. All good and powerful radios though.

Hope this helps

Thanks for all the replys so far. they are helpful. Hopefully I can narrow it down soon. SSB is probably a feature that I would want in the future now that I think of it.

Thanks

deciding which radio

I read that about the 95T somewhere. Can't remember. Can anyone comment on the Connex 4600Turbo receiver? How it compares to the others out there. My friend has a Galaxy 88 with the rk mic on it and berube's in New hampshire did his work. He put a modulator part in it the other day himself it was really easy to instal and I'll tell ya that thing is LOUD!. But i'm not crazy about the 88 and I dont want the same setup. I will call radioactive when Im closer to buying. I dont want to waste his time at this point. I take forever to make decisions :-? Thanks

Any superwackpack radio that comes from ***Censored*** is going to be LOUD and PROUD! So you don't have to worry about which will be the loudest, all you need to decided is what features you want in the radio. If you haven't already, go here [Please login or register to view this link] and you can compare the features of each radio.

My 4600 recieves great ! I do think I have an antenna issue which I am correcting. I recieved my Preditor 10K yesterday and am putting it on today. Maybe next week I will run a comparison between the wilson 2000 and the 10K to see if it was the antenna at fault. I do hear clear audio even low and in the static which suprises me. I cant use the squelch because I am reaching some ppl even though I can barely hear them because of the power of the unit. But the fact that I can hear them even if barely means I have a great recieve.

HI dalonzi,
Welcome to the forum!

Connex 4600 Turbo- no sideband, variable talkback add $50, very excellent RX, if RA does it.

Galaxy 95T – if it pleases BobOstro61 it will probably please you, and wow it's a beautiful machine too.
I wonder if a hole could be drilled for the echo pot? No access to echo would bum me out.
40 dB pad instead of variable receive. No variable RF gain would really bum me out.

Galaxy 99V – very hard to beat this one with the criteria you’ve given. It’s not the most powerful one, but you might change your mind about the separate amp. I find that 300-400 watts is the minimum for "transmission confidence". <new term...do ya like it? 8)
I think you’ve already narrowed selection to the best radio and technician. Now for the money part…. :-|

Galaxy 88- you ruled this one out, I would too.
magnum S9- cheap construction issues

Add one to the list? The Connex 4800, if I'm seeing right, it loses the big power of the 95T, but it gains the variable RF gain, and external Echo. Find out if this is the digital echo, you may like it better.
I would recommend adding the variable talkback option. The small meter is a bummer, but I have grown to be quite happy with the one on my General Lee. It's also not as pretty as the 95T but a sticker from MTNDEWNUT, spiced up my General Lee nicely.

Does anyone on this forum use a 4800?

You said no separate amp at this time. Don't sweat it. I love the separate amp option. Nobody puts a DaveMade M400 inside the box yet!

Wipe your chin, your drooling! :Peace!:

Hope to hear from you soon dalonzi!
Your off to a great start by researching first!

am i the only one that has never had a problem with an S9
other than not able to use key up toys, without the momemtary switch that comes with them because they switch 12 volts to ground instead of 8 volts. i have beat this thing to death on every single channel it has on am fm and ssb.. including off roading every week...

Bazookajoe,

About the Magnum S9,
I am only repeating what I have heard and read in efforts to give food for thought to dalonzi's post. Perhaps I should use different terminology to describe what I have heard is a loose feel to the knobs, and what was described as staples to make some connections inside.

I did not mean to offend anyone. I agree with you on the "no break" qualifier. I do remember that behind the statements about loose knobs it was usually added "no problems". I figured my response was longwinded enough already.

My apologies if I have offended you.
