SSB CB Freqs. on scanner???

Just curious... I've never tried, but I was wondering if you can monitor SSB freqs. on a scanner that receives 11 meter band? Would it be different than the regular AM freqs as far as listening on a scanner?

You can receive it fine, but you wouldn't be able to understand it - unless your scanner has a beat frequency oscillator (aka clarifier) on it. That's because SSB is a form of AM that does not utilize a carrier, and to make sense of the received signal, the carrier must be injected back into it in the receiver. That's what a BFO or clarifier circuit does.

The frequencies are the same as regular AM.

The last scanner I had was AM/FM only. So, if your scanner was like mine, then no.

The frequencies are the same. The method of modulating the carrier is not. AM has three components - the carrier, lower sideband and upper sideband. When someone keys up on AM without talking, there's only the carrier. As they talk, the upper and lower sidebands are created. That's why you can understand someone talking on AM even though you're using SSB. But it doesn't work the other way around because your SSB signal does not have a carrier.

So, while some scanners can receive the 11 meter band, if it only has AM and FM modes you won't be able to understand them.
