Proper height of Base Antenna

#24202

Post by Guest »

Hey guys I figure I should be getting my ducks in a row since I have a SWP 2547 on the way and was curious about something.......My current base set up is :
A99 Antenna, Mounted to a 30' antenna mast pole I got from lowes, It is attached to a bare power pole.....There are no lines hook to this pole. I have ground the antenna and so forth .
But the main question is should I be trying to figure out a way to raise the antenna up more? Will the benefit be better local or skip traffic if I raise it ? Thanks guys

I am just concerned with the mast pole not holding the wieght .....I might have to do some rienforcments and shove that baby up another 20' or so...

30' is good but higher the better i put up a 40' push up pole with a a99
it holds it just fine you may want to run guide wires to help support it from the wind :Peace!:

Thumper ....would I be better off raising the antenna where it is at now to a total of 50' of height....or moving the antenna to the top of the hill behind my house, which in turn would raise it over 100' from the height it is now...but the down side would be I would have a 400-500' run of coax.......so what do ya think

that is tuff

if the hill is close it would help ya walk the dog to be on top of the hill
but i more inlikely would just push it up

Yeah I would have to use LMR coax so it would get expensive.....I think I will just push it up.....unless someone wants to give me a roll of LMR coax

The hill starts about 25-30' from the back of the house and to the top of it would be 400-500' up the hill I would say it would be an easy 200' higher on top of the hill than where it is now.....I just wonder if the lose I will suffer through the coax would be worth the extra height  .....

wow , I was just pricing LMR400 and some 9913 and man that stuff is expensive.....I may just have to shove the pole up a litle higher where it is at for now.....unless I can find a good deal on coax :Peace!:

Yep...expensive. However, your ears would be absolutely awesome! And the better the ears, the better you'd TX! It's that simple. When I had my antron at 100' on top of a 1000' mountain, I didn't need my amp. In fact, I finally pulled it off line because I never used it.

[Please login or register to view this link] is a helpful link that you'll see your (theoretical) loss. Keep in mind, it doesn't compensate for your gain at that height, either. My guess is it's pretty accurate...but after experiencing 1st hand the difference that height makes (especially that much), to me it would be worth it.

Cool Link , interesting though Beldon 9913 doesnt have that much more loss than LMR400

Hey I was using that coax calculator and I figured something out ....I would have way too much loss and it would defeat the purpose...if I was pumping out some major wattage it might be feasible . I also talked RA and he advised the same

Build you a little building with electricity closer to the antenna. Get you a remote control for the radio to turn it on, change channels, etc. Get a long wire for an external speaker and a long mic cord to run back into your house. That might work.

LOL I hear ya , I think I will just see how far I can shove it up where it is at now ........I have some access to pipe so I should be able to figure something out

But that is a idea....build me a little building .....that is a hell of an idea...put me a TV, All my radio gear, little mini fridge, I already have a wireless network set up so I could take my PC too ....that would be alright

Thomas Edison said " Every man should have a dog house "

In Ft Myers, FL he had a house that had an identical room above his wifes room which was his dog house. I guess he needed it a lot.
