Tube Conversion Kit Maco 300
Anyone here familier with a tube conversion kit for a Maco 300? I'm thinking of buying one that switches the 8950 tubes to 6LB6 tubes. Right now the amp isn't working & i'd like to have it fixed, so i figured i'd start by buying new tubes. The guy i got it from wrapped the fuse with aluminum foil & it hasn't worked since. Anyone here ever done a conversion? Any input would be appreciated! Thanks, CW_357

Re: Tube Conversion Kit Maco 300
I have an old Sweep tube amp that uses 6JR6's and 8950's also. There isn't any advantage in going to the 6LB6 in my opinion, they are just as hard to find and as expensive. I have seen some info on converting from sweep tubes to a Russian Svetlana tube, they are plentiful and much less expensive. I haven't done any conversions myself but I did just buy 5 new Svetlana tubes for an amp that has already been converted, they were $130 with shipping from Russia. I also I have a Yaesu 101E that needs tubes and hope to convert it in the future.

nice lookin piece of equipment ya got there 385! The one i have is the 7 tuber, 2 drivin 5. I sure hope i can get this thing workin'. Everything that i've read about it says it's a talker, right now i've got a texas star 225 mobile hooked up to a battery in the house. It does pretty good but i'm sure an old tube amp would be much better... I used to have a 4 tuber elkin about 10-12 years ago, i still kick myself every now & then for gettin rid of it...lol
ya'll have a good evenin' 73's CW

Hey CW, That thing should do the deed. I think my tubes are getting weak but, it DK's about 200 and swings 600. Get nothing but flowers. Driving it with a RCI 2950 non dx or a philly 148 at 3 watts dk. It will do more but I don't push it to hard. Built in 1977 and far as i know it still has the original tubes in it.

Theres no doubt that maco made a great amp, I owned one for years and if it had a band switch I would most likely still have it.

You can use the 6LB6 to replace the 8950.CW_357 wrote:Anyone here familier with a tube conversion kit for a Maco 300? I'm thinking of buying one that switches the 8950 tubes to 6LB6 tubes.
The only problem your going to have is with the filament voltage since the 8950 uses a 13volt heater and the 6LB6 uses 6.3volts you'll have to figure out how to heat them with the right voltage. Run in series maybe? They both use a 12 pin Compactron socket and the pinouts are identical except the 6LB6 doesn't use three of the pins that the 8950 does.
But it doesn't matter since the pins are no connection.
