Johnson
Okay when Prime raps about a great big johnson (no pun intended) is he talking about any of the tube Johnson cb radios that you find on eBay now ??? or is it a specific model that's referred to ? I know they're dated but I was looking on the bay last night and there are quite a few of them available and I'm thinking of pulling the trigger on one.

Re: Johnson
Thanks Hobbieville. The Viking 500 and the Ranger series must be rare because when I went here [Please login or register to view this link] ,I couldn't find either of those radios listed.
I'll do an internet search for pics of those models you mentioned...
....or maybe Foxhunter has some.

Re: Johnson
I use a Johnson Viking Valiant and Viking Ranger. Both are vintage vacuum tube transmitters for AM only with high level modulation (plate modulation). The Ranger output is 40 Watts of carrier as for the Valiant its 100 watts. The Ranger is capable
of broadcast audio....... well 100=12Khz which is phase linear with simple mods to the audio chain. The Valiant is a different story major redesign is required for good audio and for over 100% positive modulation.

Re: Johnson
I don't know about that, Johnson produced both transmitters from the early 50s into the 60s. The later version changed the paint scheme and didn't operate on 11meters but on 6 metersSheriff Bart wrote:are these the Johnson radios usually referred to as a 1955 Johnson ???

Re: Johnson
Some really nice pic's in this thread. Many here know that I like some of the old rigs so naturally I wanted to at least post and compliment a little. I've bid conservatively (futile) on a number of big Johnsons in the last year or so and every time the collector buzzards came circling/swooping in---but that was really to be expected anyway. The Viking Ranger/Adventurer etc or similar rigs or any of the ones from Drake or Collins etc---all these types are serious collector-class radios and often fetch high dollar prices. Not only do these sought-after radios have somewhat legendary performance for tube audio aficionado's---they have the coolest retro face layout and paint schemes, like art-deco works of electronic art. Collector pieces. Keep those eyes peeled Soldier in the Keystone.

Re: Johnson
The Valiant was also capable of Sideband operation if used with a Phase Type Sideband Exciter like the one manufactured by Heathkit. [Please login or register to view this link]KOA4705 wrote: Both are vintage vacuum tube transmitters for AM only with high level modulation (plate modulation).
