Re: What have you recently acquired for new radio gear ?
Ok, well I got the sweet 16 in the mail yesterday from that i purchased on ebay for 200+ that was listed as dead. With about an hour of close inspection I found 2 of the keying transistor legs with cold solder joints and some one had set it up to only work with the remote head, that was not part of the auction. After fixing those few small thing it was on the air swinging 800 pep with 10 watt dk swingin to 100, working it off an old car battery that was tested to have about half of the cca it should, with the 10 w dk it shows around 300w and swing to 800 on am. I cant wait to get a beter power sorce to really make it talk.

theres a few new radios i'v just got, one is the uniden grant XL ( i think its the newer version), 2 realistic trc 430 which are great in a car because you can change the channals with out having to reach around looking for the knob . also a 18 foot shakespear big stick to use on the Navaho 492, and move the astroplane over to the other side of the garage and run my Uniden grant on . And to finsh up got my self a Sadelta echo master Plus power mic, has a nice sounding roger beep and echo.

Re: What have you recently acquired for new radio gear ?
I picked up an astatic Mobilemax. I plan to sell it but it is a clean unit and I couldn't pass it up. It has 10 roger beep settings, voice recorder, and the echo stuff. It basically a sound effects deal but they are really nice for what they are. I'm just not an echo guy, but if you're into echo, this thing is an echo machine. My 4 year old loves it, I pluged it into an external speaker for him to check out. You can count to about 5 before it starts echoing your count and it echos a long time.

Re: What have you recently acquired for new radio gear ?
Well I've been running this Connex 4600 turbo I just picked up ,for the last 3 or 4 days and all I can say is WOW!!!!!!!! This is one nice radio, loud and clean sounding and it's getting out 20+ miles up here in the Cascades Mts. real well. I've been using it in my mobil in place of my Uniden pc66 and a 1x2, and I like it especially for the bucks I spent. If you guys have given these any thought I'd say go for it, if your not into running an amp with the radio you have. I think one from Radio Active or Sparkys is the way to go. This one was done by Al and I'm pleased as punch! Hey Sporty Mike, I've never seen a 3300 side mounted mic, my GL is an early one and it has the mic on the front. Ok I'm still "honey mooning" over this new radio.

I bought a 4 pin/5 pin DIN mic adapter today and a replacement whip for my Wilson 1000. I had the old one cut for 10M, and needless to say, the 29 didn't like it so I went and picked up another from GI Joe's.

Re: What have you recently acquired for new radio gear ?
Well I went and bought another mic (really the last thing I need) and now have another uber cool retro Astatic mic head. Has the vintage hand-held neck grip instead of the typical G-stand, or it can be threaded onto an older mic stand. It's one of Astatic's earliest in the series. It does have an element problem, it doesn't have clear audio. It didn't even work at first, but I dismantled it and finally got it to respond----but the quality varies significantly, from great to poor and everywhere in between. Worse case I'll put a Heil element in and call it a day.

Re: What have you recently acquired for new radio gear ?
Well I've plundered a few more things recently for radio treasure and am happy about it----considering the fact that lately I've been living in financial drought conditions. I know I'm only one of millions though, and for many things really ARE tough all over.
Since I lost my digital camera (I hate when that happens) I can't post pics right now of two of the three goodies I grabbed up in the last week or so, but do have one shot from the for sale ad for one of the small items.
First, I met up with a very kind Ebay seller---a local African American Extra-Class---who gave me an old Turner OEM-brand, silver zinc hospital paging mic, and it is in very nice condition. He is a very kind and intelligent man, 99% a CW operator. The mic looks nearly identical to the Turner 454X (which I also have) but in bare brushed silver, instead of being black painted. Well it originally had a 3-pin XLR for a jack connector, but that was before he took it off and attempted to get it to work with his rig (he gave me the XLR separately). He couldn't wire the mic correctly and get it to work with his Ten-Tec base rig, and since I had already bought a vintage Astatic mic off of him recently (see my above post), he contacted me again and offered the mic to me for free. Really cool. I believe, from his description of having TX but no RX, that maybe the mic needs a relay for proper transmit/receive but I don't know and I'll have to look into it, maybe compare the base wiring to the other similar Turner 454X.
Secondly, I was trying to do online research on problems I was initially having with my Fanon Courier Gladiator PLL 40. After reading Night Crawler mentioning it as one of his choice rigs in another thread, I decided I'd better get mine out and check it out! Well before long I was noticing SSB sideband problems (turns out it needs a real alignment job done on it, it's way out) and then suddenly I started blowing fuses (after much worry it ended up being crossed wires in the power cable plug). But while I was still trying to look the radio up online, I noticed a current ad on Craigslist for a factory service manual for the Gladiator, but the guy was 300-miles to the north of me. Well anyway after some negotiating, I got him to send me two radio service booklets that I can certainly use at some point.
So I've added:
Vintage Turner desk mic
Fanon Courier Gladiator PLL 40 & 40A Factory Service Manual and Schematic Sheets
I.D.E.A Inc Monitoradio Model MR-10 Sam's Photofact Folder (still sealed in original plastic)

So.... I've been really lucky. I buy from eBay and have had some decent finds.
But.... it's only a matter of time.
I payed $50.00 for a pile of microphone parts. The pic shows 4 Astatic stands, a minute man mic, parts from a d 105 head and 3 other music mics.
Guess what? They are all empty shells. Nothing but junk, even though the ad clearly states that they are all repairable !
Like I said, it only a matter of time....

Re: What have you recently acquired for new radio gear ?
Yeah, On ebay it's the electronic section that is the worse, especially the estate sales that show equipment not powered up and the seller claiming he doesn't know a thing about electronics..... but that is all they sell is electronics? Buyer Beware lol.... it's just a gamble with those auctions...
Anyway here's my new gear.... SS-158 EDX
[Please login or register to view this link]
I did the channel mod according to the youtube vid by cbradiomagazine. And set the deadkey at 2w swinging 50watts, very nice radio... I'm good on radios for a couple of years I think, unless something really cool comes along like a Connex CX TLM with SSB lol....

Re: What have you recently acquired for new radio gear ?
Is that it ? I'd watched that same listing and had messaged the Seller about them. The same with a nearly identical listing 2 months prior. Ask "are the guts still in them" and many other specific questions, and save the answers given back to you in case there's a dispute. Even then, by asking direct pointed questions---you'll be lucky to get a straight answer. "Technically speaking" I guess they are "reparable", if they get a total rebuild and all the parts are available. With vintage stuff, the parts (if you can find them) are far more expensive often than the item itself or even for another complete working mic etc. 8 times out of 10, someone's going to hide the problems and rely on bidder hopes that things are as they are described. Most keep these hidden aspects or problems all "hush-hush". With used electronics, eBay is a rip-off city and a haven for junk peddlers. Better off buying something brand new or used from one of our Sponsors or fellow CBRT Members. I know I've about had it with eBay and Craigslist etc.Evil_Wind wrote:So....I payed $50.00 for a pile of microphone parts. Ok, so here's my latest additions to the NJ station, falling under the "accessory department". A set of old vintage desk microphones. Each has an issue or two that certainly wasn't described in the ad, and only ONE of the three is the correct model that they were listed as being-----which really bothers me. Never fails with an eBay purchase, always something broken and (or) different that what it was described as. Almost always.
I can only say I'm fairly pleased that their elements work great. OVER half of the older styles you'll find have BAD ruined elements, and are very expensive to restore.

I picked up a Cobra Cam 89, with two Astatic D-104s, and a Wilson Lil Wil antenna yesterday. All for $50. Radio is in good shape with a few scratches, but overall it is fine. One of the D-104s you can tell is a little old, and probably has seen better days, but the other D-104 is in great condition. The radio is deadkeying about 8 to 10 watts. After a nice clean it should be a decent radio!
