Re: What have you recently acquired for new radio gear ?
Glad to see this thread back in action. My latest find was a TRC-9 in flawless condition for $2. I almost passed over it but decided it would be cool to have a blast from the past. This radio only has three slots for crystals and came with crystals for channel 19, 9 , and 5. It transmits and receives just fine and is one of the older radios that has the mic hard wired into the radio itself. Looked it up and it came out in 1973.
On a side note, I've started listing my most recent finds in my signature.

In order of oldest to most recent acquisition, a Taiwan 140GTL, a Taiwan 148GTL, a dead President McKinley, a Malaysia 148GTL, a good President McKinley, various 4 foot fiberglass antennas, and a smattering of wilson mag mounts. Oh yeah, and a DigiScan 2 Mod #6, for PLL02A rigs. Don't know where I'm going to ever use that......

Re: What have you recently acquired for new radio gear ?
Why is it I can't ever find anything as good as that? I hit yard sales, estate sales, and thrift stores around here and while I have found and bought a good bit of radios I still haven't found what I would call a steal, ie a working SSB radio with with extra channels or a 2 meter radio for $10 or less. Keep dreaming I guess.

Heres photos of the new Browning mobile. It came with the RoadKing 56 mic.556 wrote:Just received a Baron by Browning, Mint condition. Nice little radio.
P.S. The knob behind the mic jack is a mod that was added by a previous owner for extra channels. Its not stock.

I guess so. Although I'm in Alabama, and it would seem that decent radio finds, especially cb, would be easier to come by here; but it's not the case. I like this thread, but it gets frustrating hearing about all these people that find boxes of SSB radios, and desk mics for $5 at a yard sale, while people around here want to charge $50 for just an Astatic 636 hand mic.crazydiamond wrote:location location location....Here in Upstate NY i'd be lucky to find a handheld mic at a yard sale....BobCB wrote:Why is it I can't ever find anything as good as that? Re: What have you recently acquired for new radio gear ?
I don't know about most folks but I'm a regular thrift/yard sale shopper and it takes a LOT of shopping to run across cb stuff. I do find it on craigs list easily in phases, with some long dry spells. I liken it to gambling. Usually the people you hear about that have won lots at the casino have also gambled a lot and very frequently. In all reality, the person that finds the yard sale bargain has much more invested in time and gas. Other times I've noticed that I've found bargains by buying in bulk. Often you'll run across someone with a huge estate of radio stuff. Each item is priced to market value and it appears that the person is trying to get full blown retail. Maybe they have a pile and if you add it all up it adds up to some crazy price like $3000. In that situation I can often offer something like $800 for it all. Then, they're a little insulted and feeling defensive, so they counter with $1500 and you settle on $1200. There is something about the $1000 threshold that is magical and opens the door on a transaction. You grab it all, sell what you don't want, and you're all of a sudden in good shape. As you sift through the stuff, you'll run across jumpers, connectors, optional filters installed in hf rigs, rare items, all that just line your pockets or shelves.
Also, if you're hitting yard sales and only looking for specific items like radio stuff you'll be sadly disappointed. Look around, there is treasure everywhere. I buy stuff all the time and have a local girl that lists it in ebay and handles all of the transaction part and split it all with. That's how you make this crazy hobby free and at times moneymaking. Don't forget dumpster diving and curb surfing. The possibilities are endless.

Re: What have you recently acquired for new radio gear ?
like drdx I use craigslist too. I bought a 29LTD Classic from a guy in GA. for $20 and tomorrow I'm getting a HR-2510 and a palomar 250 for $100, again from a craigslist ad. My advice is keep looking. Two years ago I found a Ranger AR-3500 for $75 on craigslist and bought it from a guy in Cali....there are deals out there. My next hunt is for either a Kenwood TS 440 or a Yaesu FT-101E or ZD.

I've got one of those JC Penney "Pinto" 23 channel bases with the aluminum front like the one pictured. They are awesome radios and really get out!
Hit another "hamfest" today. A guy sold me a Cobra 29 Nightwatch / Soundtracker for $5 complete with original mic and power cord. He priced it at $20... I offered $10... and he replied "just give me 5 bucks and get it out of here". I fully obliged
Also got an Icom PCR100 computer controlled wideband receiver (.1 MHz to 1200 MHz) for $65. Had one years ago and been looking for another at a good price. Forgot all I knew about them... so now for some study time.

I'm jealous of you guys getting all the great deals. The only place I can find a deal of any sort is ebay but they are few and far between.
Latest is a Galaxy DX88HL, decent deal but not 5 bucks that's for sure.
Also got a couple of Icom IC-F621 mobiles that I'll be using for GMRS. Curious to see what kind of range I can get once I setup a vertical base antenna at the house.

Latest deal here is a Galaxy DX949 found at a pawn shop for $10. Was very dirty and missing two knobs when first found, but luckily an old Realistic mobile parts rig helped put the Galaxy back to original shape. Someone has done an awesome peak and tune and installed an echo board. The thing gets out there and talks. Definitely my best CB "find" to date.

Re: What have you recently acquired for new radio gear ?
I figure rather than tell everyone what I've found lately I'll post some pics instead.
First up is a Cobra 21x. This is a 23 channel radio and is in very good shape for its age. It has surprisingly good receive and transmit, and the meter and all lights still work. I can hear things much more clearer than I can with my newer radios and have an easier time pulling someone out of the static with it. It also has a ton of swing on transmit. I spent $3 on it.
At the same place I found this Royce 1-601 23 channel for $3. It needs a mic and power cord, but I couldn't pass over it because of its condition. It still smells new!
This was discounted and I got it for $2.50. It's a Radioshack Pro-2050. It actually already had a lot of local frequencies programmed into it. While most of our local 800mhz traffic is digital, some is still analog which is where this comes into play. Works great!
This is a Motorola Mocat 2040. I bought it for $10. In my time with this hobby I have never seen a Motorola CB radio so I had to get it. If you look closely you can see that the case it's in is actually a "Motorola" case. The case is designed so that you don't have to disconnect the mic, you just slide it into it's slot and then put the radio in. Pretty cool. Here's another pic of it removed from the case.
I bought this little gadget for $2. It's a Realistic MW/VHF radio. It looks like it's some kind of early scanner considering it has the "Patrolman" name on it which was what Realistic's line of scanners were called. My research shows it to be from around 1965. Put batteries in it and it works just fine. The pic makes it look large but it's actually palm size.
