im just wondering how many batteries and if i should upgrade my alternator to run that 4x6 texas star 1600v in a 2001 chevy blazer and what coax should i use after the box

Coax wise, LMR400 would do fine but opinions vary. That amp will need a lot of amperage. I'm not sure what your vehicle offers but plan on needing at least 10 amps per 100 watts, but that amp has a built in driver that will pull more, so figure a little more, let's say 140 amps. I don't know what tx star says, but that's a ballpark. Then, figure that your vehicle needs some charging too, so make sure you have a 140 amp or larger alternator at a minimim, and I'm thinking that since you're not talking all the time and not running all of the vehicle's accessories you can cheat a little. Really for it all you'd want probably a 180 amp alternator or larger and we have sponsors here that offer them. An extra battery will help cushion the blow and for the power wires for the amp run #2, yep the big garden hose stuff, for the power and fuse it at the batteries too. For the 2nd battery, if you can, run it right near the amp for best performance. If you are a conservative operator, you can try at first to run that thing on a stock system and see what the results are, but at a bare minimum you'll want that extra battery.

I think what the poster above was saying is that the amp is not a 4x6, it is a 2x8, 2 transistors driving 8.

i have a ts-1600 running it in my 2001 dodge ram diesel 2 baterries and 1 alternator believe its 136 amp and batteries are 930cca coax rg-8 (planning on upgrading sometime soon lol.) the ts-1600 beleive is 180 amp draw and i think radio is another 50 amps. my 1600 is a straight 8-pill no driver built in

the blazer has a 100 amp alternator so when i get my amp ill try it with the stock charging with 2 extra batteries then we will go from there maybe a mechman alternator

From Tx star, the regular straight 1600 is fused at 120 amps. I don't know what the V is fused for. I'd think that both models would do about the same. A typical 1600 straight one will do around 1200, maybe a little more, but they don't like being pushed or volted. Let that thing cruise at 750-1000 and call it a day. I think the drive in there is overkill, as a 1600 only needs about 50 watts drive to achieve 1kw, but it will be nice to be able to leave the 8 pills out of line and have that 2 pill in there for drive around and the 8 pills on tap for spanking if you're lucky enough to live somewhere that 8 pills is a lot. Much of your results will also depend on the deadkey and swing of your radio. If you're a "mauler" that runs a bigger carrier, then the amp draw will be much more than if you like to throw a couple of watts in there and have big swing. On a big swing deal, between words the draw dramatically drops as long as your noise level in the vehicle is low, and that helps the charging system cover that demand as your average draw is less. I've low driven a 1600 on a 90 amp alt. and dual optimas with great luck but I was only running in the 700 watt RMS range at the time.

I know someone will chime in and say that his 1600 does some crazy wattage, like 1500, but that's probably a case of a really generous meter. Don't push that amp. The signal difference between letting it cruise comfortably at less than a kw and mashing it is invisible. If you want a 1600 watt signal, you'll need a larger amp.

if it is a ts1600 then it does have adriver built in unless had it taken out for a radio that pulls 50 amps?

I think the ts1600 is the old sweet 16 (no driver, straight 8 pill) and the ts1600v is the newer one with the built in driver.
Wait..........maybe it is the DX1600 that's the old one. I wish they'd named them better.

Edited in: Ok, I just looked, and both start with dx, and the v is the one with the driver.

drdx is right i have an older one with out the driver they do also make the new ones the 1600v with my setup galaxy 98vhp and ts 1600 radio deadkey about 25 and swings about 200 im seeing on my meter 700 swinging to about 1100-1300 with the amps on

the sweet sixteen isnt old they still make that to, the 1600v is just a updated version with variable, internal driver, and a $1000 dollar price tag, not to mension it draws amps like a monstor,its just better to go and buy a comp amp, like Fatboy, Davemade, Xforce, etc with that kind of money...

man my goodness... 700 watt dk and only swing to 1300?? with that dk, i think the math says your amp should be swinging 2800 watts. we all know that a ts 8 pill in all actuality wont do that much.

on another note... i say run that amp on your stock alt and 2 battery setup. like drdx said keep the carrier low so the charging system can recover a little easier. with a nice clean radio going into a 8 pill that is being cruised i think you cant go wrong with it, i do it myself.

its not dead keying 700 its more like 400-500 watts, iv seen it in person, on the techs bench on the other hand it dead keys 600 and swings past 1500... with the 98vhp...

We can have "My sweet16 does a million watts" talk all day, but the bottom line is that it is a 1200 clean watt amp at best(and that's a stretch probably) and doesn't need over probably 75 watts to achieve that. 8 pills, that's almost 10 watts each for drive, that's plenty. If you're seeing 1500, you're probably seeing a loose meter, garbage, or a lot of both. The signal difference between 1000 and 1500 watts is less than a needle width, so why fool yourself?


Those are great units and with anything they have a limit. I love them. Get one of those, either model, and cruise it on sideband and be a rock star. In a small town, maybe on am too, but in the real world, it usually takes a little more in a mobile.

1200 clean watts, good audio, and be satisfied with it. NO sense in pushing your unit and be looking for another soon.

it does 1300 talking watts, 1500 if you yell, that is with a galaxy 98vhp none of this is mine im just telling you what it does i do know the 98vhp does 20 watts swingin 200 and he gets great reports every time, the amp does get a little hot but that can be always fixed with fans.

AB, I think what they are saying is, they know it will DO that much, (distorted, dirty, over modulated) power, but they are just letting him know that a good, clean, quality signal with 1000-1200W is the way to go, unless of course he is trying to be a Super Bowl player, then crank that Mod up to 300% and drive it to death!!! LOL
