Base antenna question

#31238

Post by hjc1953 »

we live in a mobile home with a peaked metal roof. currently i am using a realistic trc477 40 ch as a base and a magnetic mount antenna on my mobile home roof. i am probably 10-12 0ff the ground. If i mount this on a pole and go up to say 30' would it still work as it no longer would have the roof as a ground plane. right now i have a almost 1:1 swr.any help would be appreciated.

Buy a base antenna and mount that on a pole. A mobile antenna is not giving you much range and wont do much better higher up.

You could buy an Antron A-99 base antenna fairly inexpencively and mount it on a pole with a huge improvement in TX RX. The A-99 grounds to your electrical system on the radio and house ground so the metal roof is not a problem.

Yes losing your ground plane would defeat the purpose of making your antenna higher. Agreed buy a inexpensive base antenna!
