Best non power mic

I am on my 3rd power mic in my base and every one i use squeals, even with all mic gains turned down.. So i wanna know what is the best or a good mic to use that is not a power mic? the radios i will be using are a President Lincoln and a Realistic TRC431.. what are the best mics i could match up to these rdaios? but not power mics, i have a Turner SSB+2, Astatic Tug-8 d104, and a Astatic road devil, and none of these will work in my base they all squeal, but they all are in fine working shape and have used then at friends houses or in the car just to test them.. so i gave up and power mics are out of the question

Before you put all your power mics in the closet you might try grounding all your radio equipment to a ground rod fist . The microphones may not be the problem you could be getting a lot of RF feedback in the system .

yeah i have a post about that, and thats what most people thought it was, i can't run a ground rod yet, gotta wait for the ground to thaw, i have every thing running to a ground bus now

Boy, that's a drag. I agree...almost always if a radio is squealing like you've described it's RF getting back into the transceiver through the mic. Are you sure they are wired properly? Dumb question I suppose...but worth asking. The TUG8 D104 I know for a fact will squeal if the battery isn't very good. I had an old Midland that it was necessary to run an extra ground wire off of the spring of my D104 as well to a good ground source. For some reason it'd get RF back in it like you are experiencing. But that was just one power mic, even the Turners I had didn't squeal...just the D104. Something is odd there.

As far as the best non-amplified mic, there are tons of boom mics out there. But they are probably more pricey than you want to dish out. A decent stock mic until you get the problem figured out would probably be what I'd consider.

I put a new battery in the road devil and the negative wire came lose and i didn't see it and it shorted out, i felt the mic getting hot in my hand so i opened it up and there was the wire hanging lose and the battery was hotter then hell, i hope the mic still works after i get it resoldered, the solder point inside are way too small for me to feel comfortable doing it.

You will be fine get yourself a good magnifying glass and take your time you will have it soldered in no time. I use a 30 watt soldering iron with a fine tip to solder most of my microphone and coax connectors probably not the best choise for the supertechs but it works for me.

Hey Dime this is probably a dumb question , but , are you running talkback when you're using these mics? Because most all power mics squeal like Hades when you've got the talkback on. Like I said , you probably already know this but I thought I would ask anyway.

no, no talkback, only one that has talkback is the 959 and i do not use a power mic with that radio, she talks loud enough with out one

Oh man that sucks!!! just saw one of those at the pawn shop for 10 bucks, i just looked at it and thought i would be crap.. I'm gonna go back to check it out but i bet its gone, radio stuff goes fast there, when they first opened about 6 months back they had 6 cobra 29's for under 30 bucks

I got it, i did not have a fine tip for any of my irons so i took the dremel tool with a grinding wheel and made my 25 watt iron a fine tip.. it worked just fine, i always dremel my tips when they get tarnished

Great job dime i never doubted you could do it. Soldering is like everything it just takes practice . There is a lot of great tip on Youtube about soldering coax connector,circuit boards and such i especially like CBrepairguys videos.

hi dustin, i wonder if your "homemeade dipole" is tuned? ,,, maybe it could be the cause of the squeal feedback,,, just a thought, don't get mad, ,, or might be that the external speaker(if thats what your using) is to close to your radio. is the cover on the radio?

my dipole give me a SWR of 1.3 or lower on all channels, but i know one side is a lot longer then the other, i was having problems tuning it and i added a extra coil to one side and it flattened my SWR, it sound messed up but it gave me good numbers so i never thought about it again till now

ok, next antenna question,
how far off the ground is it? and where is it in relation to the radio? (under it,or 20ft. off to the side, or ???)
do you have/using a balun?

i live in an apartment, the dipole is on the porch, i am on the ground floor, the antenna runs across the bottom beam of my upstairs porch from one side to the other. then i have a computer desk right inside the window off the porch, the antenna is only like 8 feet away for the desk.

Also try changing some of your coax jumpers before disgarding your power mics. But my suggestion for non power mics on the base would be a nonamplified astatic d104. As for the mobile i recommend an astatic 636. In my experience astatic makes the best microphone. Best of luck to you Rooster

I won't run anything but the Astatic's for my mobiles..... Their clear and provide a slightly better balance yet lean toward the higher end of the Freq Response range of the voice, Don't like the ones that are all highs only, they get to tinny and hollow sounding...
