set up was in south jersey starduster antenna 45 feet high, cobra 142 gtl peaked (about 8 watts on am and 15 on ssb) with a silver eagle d-104...that dang radio would talk almost everywhere ( canada, barbados, jamacia, hawaii, alaska, almost all the lower 48) but ya know anyone who made a contact on that radio logged it never made a pennsylvania or new york contact but could talk over the bay to deleware on any given day

Back in the early 90's I talked to a guy in Mississippi for about 10 minutes from my friends driveway in Nova Scotia on his father's Realistic handheld with the factory extendable antenna. We thought that was the coolest thing ever

Fatman, Be careful with those "Jamaica" contacts. I have found a few pranksters who like to use the "Jamaica" Moniker. Also the "Austrailia" (which I am guilty of doing too) ehehehe

Last friday Portsmith NH to Kingston Jamaica, and tonight SE Coastal Maine to Port Charlotte FLA and West Palm Beach FLA all on a bone stock Cobra 140 GTL with a Wilson 500 mag mount. Heard alot of west coast out there after sunset (about 8 eastern time), then conditions hit the basement and I couldn't pull them in anymore.
971 Coastal Maine Mobile is my call.

Re: Longest Skip on Lowest Power?
Making regular contacts to East coast of Australia from NW Arkansas with 5 watts DK and 40 watts PEP. My best to them this April using 4 element beam and a DK of 50 watts and 175 PEP to west Coast Australia over 10,600 miles. All of these on sideband.

Re: Longest Skip on Lowest Power?
The fartherest I've ever talked on a barefoot rig, and the most memiorable was to a ship off the coast of Vietnam.
The QSO only lasted for a little while, but it was memiorable! At the time I was running an antron up about 30-40 ft and a peak and tuned Craig base station, putting out about 20 watts pep.. I was on 38 lsb it was appox 07-0800 one Sunday morning. And I live in downtown Topeka, Ks, a real hole in the ground, hills all around, can't even see the horizon!!

Re: Longest Skip on Lowest Power?
I worked a station that was 100 miles north east of Montreal Canada today on my mobile rig. I live in the center of West Virginia. My mobile rig is a texas ranger tr-396fc tuned and peaked by me and my anteena is 108" stainless whip,no amp. The frequency was 26.935mhz. My radio dead keys six watts swings to about 18 pep,swr is 1.2 between 26.735 to 27.965. that 108" whip sure is broad banded. There is no spring on my whip. All you need is a big old anteena!
If youre going to use a hammer use the biggest one you can find!

Friday evening July 8th around 9:00 after the install of a new 108” whip on the jeep.
Galaxy dx959 Barefoot. Central valley California to North Eastern Washington
Right up by the Canadian border. The kind soul on the other end said” I can hear you but it’s a little weak”. Conditions were very good and so was his antenna on RX.
I was the blind squirrel and that QSO was the nut. Thanks for making my day.

Re: Longest Skip on Lowest Power?
I have shot skip a number of times since I got hooked on CB radios at around the same time ol' C. W. McCall was ruling radio airplay with that "Convoy" song of his..The last time was very memorable, since I was briefly talking to a chap who said he was shooting back to me from...Australia! And being a tad skeptical, I kept this bit of info to myself..as I was just rolling along the Interstate in a 379 Pete using a Galaxy 959 radio with a modulator kit and a Road King 56 mic connected by 18' of coax to a Wilson 5000 Trucker antenna..So, contrary to popular belief, it can be done!

In '90, I used to talk to a mobil in Northern Cal from SW Arkansas with a di pole about 10' and a 2 tube mobil amp doing 50 amps.
About the same time my son talked to the World Down Under on a bare foot Sears Road Talker SSB and di pole.
