Astatic 611L or 636L
I need to get a new mic for my Galaxy 929 and I was looking at two astatic mics, the 611 and 636. The 611 is a standard mic and the 636 is, of course, the noise cancelling type. I don't drive a rig so I dont think I need the NC, but I don't know much about the 611L. Does the NC mic take away any of the performance of the radio? The 636 seems to be cheaper than the 611.

Re: Astatic 611L or 636L
I may be mistaken, but I think the 611 is an older mic that was still made by Astatic. The present day 636's are made after being sold to Bar-Jan, thus the cheaper price. All a NC mic does is cut out the background noise, so if you're not in a noisy environment, there's no need for you to have to use one, although if you do, that 929 should have enough audio adjustment to make for the 636's lower output.

Re: Astatic 611L or 636L
That makes sense. Is the 631L the pre barjan NC mic? If I go the NC route, would I be better off with that than the 636? I think I am leaning toward the 611L.

Re: Astatic 611L or 636L
Any of the older Astatics no longer made are pre Barjan. The best way I know of to tell if current produced model mics are Barjan of older Made in USA Astatics is by the address on the back and the sticker/logo on the front. If the sticker/logo is a glossy raised soft panel deal it's a Barjan. If it's the flat sticker with Made In USA under the Astatic name it’s an older unit. The current made ones with the raised soft sticker say something like World Famous Microphones where they use to say Made In USA. Some older hand mics didn't have any sticker on the front. Instead they had Astatic as part of the molding of the plastic where the later ones have stickers.

So are the barjan-made astatic microphones junk? I imagine they are being that I see used 575-m power mics for sale at over $100 and new 104s are like $25.Nagant wrote:Any of the older Astatics no longer made are pre Barjan. The 611L is my first choice, the ad says Astatic by CAD and the label on the mic simply says "ASTATIC". Should I jump on it? If not, what is a good alternative for a standard mic? A buddy who is a log truck driver said he bought a turner road king and it didn't last very long. I thought they were supposed to be good mics too? Maybe he just got a bad one.

Re: Astatic 611L or 636L
I've had a few of the Barjan made Astatics and they seem to work fine. It's just sad they're no longer seem to be an American company and I have no idea where they make them now as the few I've had don't have the country or origin on them. I suspect they make them in China now but that's just a guess and not a proven fact.
I've never owned the 611L but it's an older Astatic. Therefore if it's in good condition, working, and the price is right I'd buy it and try it if it was my choice.

Re: Astatic 611L or 636L
OK to add to the confusion. I just did a online search and noticed the 611L's are are still being sold new with the last version U.S. made Astatic front sticker. I always remembered seeing these with the older darker colored sticker from many years ago. The online places that have them for sale look to be music stores. I can't say if they are selling new old stock or new units being made by Barjan.
