New microphones
I just bought a couple new microphones. I couldn't decide between the Astatic 636L NC mic and an omni-directional mic, 611L, from their commercial line. I just said the heck with trying to decide and just bought both of them. I am very happy with them so far. With the exception of having to open the mic head and re-wire the switching device for CB use (thanks Nightcrawler for the how-to) and put on a 4 pin connector, the 611 is awesome. I have only had one other non-stock mic before which was a high gear-73. It seemed to sound a little better than the stock Cobra mic, or maybe it was because it has a wider grill for voice pick-up instead of the nickle size hole in the factory deal. I also liked the softer and easier stretching 9' cord. It does feel like the hand held portion could come apart if I am not careful holding it. It kind of feels cheaply made. But what a difference in sound quality from that to my new 611. It is just puts out crisp clean audio. It was a bit pricier than the 636, which also sounds really good as well, but I don't regret buying either one. I was worried that the barjan made Astatic might not live up to the old USA made Astatics. I can't imagine them any better though. They both look great, feel rugged and well made, and most importantly sound awesome. It was easier setting my mic gain with the 636 than the 611, or I should say that the needle on the modulation meter was much more stable. I guess that is due to the NC cartridge?? I am just really excited about getting them and felt like sharing to anyone who cares.
I put the 611 in my every-day pick-up with my DX929 Galaxy, and I set up my hunting/fishing rattle trap of a truck with the 636 on my 29wx cobra. I gave my wife the high gear mic for her car. --

Re: New microphones
I've used the Astatic with a mobile setup in the past.....but I've always reverted back to my old RK56.

Re: New microphones
I haven't tried any Turner mics yet. I have heard they are pretty awesome. I don't know which is better, the Astatic or Turner? I like the look and feel of the Astatic. Isn't it amazing how horrible stock mics are? I didn't get it until I got a half-way decent mic. I don't think I'll ever use a stock mic again.

Re: New microphones
i have tried tons of mics, and as I have said before...I keep coming back to my truck stop edition 636L. It takes a beating in my vehicle and had no battery to replace. It gets the job done well and I dont have to worry about Those 9 volts that seem to die at just the wrong time! 73
