I'd like to try something like at Predator 10K with a ground plane, but not sure I could get by with it. How tall above the house would something like this be for a base station? Any help or advice would be appreciated.Base Antenna

You guys got me thinking I should consider setting up a base station. What's a good base antenna that is discreet enough that I could mount it on my house without the "architecturally committee" in my suburban neighbor hood getting their underwear in a knot. I'd like to try something like at Predator 10K with a ground plane, but not sure I could get by with it. How tall above the house would something like this be for a base station? Any help or advice would be appreciated.

Base antenna's are designed different than mobile antennas. With a mobile antenna it uses the entire vehicle as a ground. With a base it uses your house grounding. You should stay with a base type of antenna.
Little Reb has a homeowners asso. and had to have approval for his antenna. They let him have the base of the antenna no higher than the fireplace ( I think he cheeted just a little and got 3 more feet ). At least at that hight he can get out a lot better than a mobile. It wouldnt hurt to ask what you can run and how high.

I've been studying for my technician license test so I can install my new antenna without any hassles from neighborhood committees or my land lord.

Thanks for all the input on antennas. Bozo suggested I check out an Imax 2000 and try to snake it up through the tree canopy I have. That looks like something that might work.
What about lighting. Do you guys have major issues with your base antennas during intense electrical storms?

If any of you guys are up towards Canada anytime soon, you should consider getting it up here, the test is about... 1/2 as hard and FCC will convert you without having to be re-tested or anything.
We only have 3 classes, basic, advanced and morse. Basic gives you access to everything over 30 MHz and if you score 80% or better you get voice HF privileges. If you do your advanced you get full HF and can do anything you want, literally! Radar detectors are illegal up here but they share one of the HAM bands so many guys will build their own "satellite transmitters" which accidentally jam and detect radar. We are actually primary on that band so some guys have asked to police to stop interfering with them and they have actually had to listen... but not just about everything is laser so there is not point lol.
Oh that reminds me of an awesome story! Personally I can't comment since I never saw it but one of the guys not too far away from me was running like 5kW on 145.150 which is shared with cable channel 18. This guy did everything; he must have talked 24/7 for the past year and a half. One day the cable company came and said he was interfering with the entire town. So he told them they needed to fix their cables lines and called the government. It took them 1 week but they fixed everything and had to move hydro poles and everything around the town to fix the leaky cable lines.
So imagine, next time everyone comes knocking that their TV turns blue, you can say "guys, your interfering with my signal, please don't make me ask you to move your TV's. LOL.. imagine? Man, you could **Censored** off everyone. That would be great!
