Firestic No Ground Plane antennas

#32485

Post by The Tech »

Does anybody know if these really work that well? I was thinking of a trunk mount antenna, but I'm not sure I would have much of a ground-plane there...

Is there anyone out there that has any experience with these antennas? By the way, I'm currently running the setup in my signature and don't plan to run any higher output (so will be well under 100 watts).

Well I'm trying to find an antenna to outperform my little wil, but not stand too high. I'm beginning to think I should stick with my little wil. I was thinking about a trunk-mount Wilson 1000, but I'm not sure it would work too good with my trunk. I think the trunk on my Taurus is aluminum (I'm not sure it's fiberglass, but I know a magnet won't stick to it).

How high is to high. Because they can be hit to an extent and just bend.
I dont think it would knock it off unless it hit more than half way of the antenna down.. but I dont know.

Tarus does not have aluminum body parts, no aluminum trunk. Mag will stick to it.

Stay away from FIBERGLASS antennas !

Maybe go to a Wilson 5000 mag mount. If you mount to your roof you will do a lot better.

Trust me...I tried sticking my little wil on my trunk. It won't stick. LoL I don't know what it's made of. But because the mag won't stick to it, I'm afraid I would lose rx and tx by going trunk-mount. :(

As for too high? The little wil is 36 inches, and I would prefer to stay under 4 feet (above my roofline) at the absolute max. Four feet above the roof of my car makes it rather difficult to park it in the garage (would have to remove it), as well as pull into parking garages. It's rather cumbersome to have to pull over and remove a CB antenna when sitting in line to get into a parking garage. Likewise, I could only imagine valet parking...which I've had to do a time or two.

My mount is about 5'4" off the ground+6" spring + 102" antenna+ about an inch or two for the actual mount itself.

Im about 14.5' or a little more to the top of my mobile antenna.
Ive busted light bulbs in parking garages before

See BigBubba...I'm more of a moderate type guy than yourself. You run over 200 watts...I run about 40. You run about 14 feet high...I just need about 9 or 10 feet. LoL

But see...that makes you a better man than me, right? haha :88-worthy:

Not at all :!: :!:

If I could fit in my garage my antenna would be way to tall. But my roof would hit the garage door so that kills that idea :Peace!:

I dont need no stinkin parkin garage !

Couldnt get under one anyway. I have to have 12 feet of clearance to get my rig under. I just went to the airport last tuesday and removed my antenna so I could get under the deck. A pain but I just dont go to places like that much. To get the better TX RX is worth it to me to have the inconvienance of not being able to go through the drive through at the bank. So I park more and walk a little more, so what. I need the exersize anyway.

Yep.

Only time I go in them is at the beach at the place you stay. But only in the RV and van section b/c I cant go where the cars go. My roof height is over 7ft.
There is only one garage in greensboro I ever venture in maby 1-2 times a year that has a restaurant we sometimes go to when we are in town.

Other than that, watch out trees, low flying birds, lines across the road and some bridges.... Here I come :Peace!:

If I wasn't going on vacation tomorrow, I would post a picture of how far my Wilson 5000 on top of my truck actually bends. If your worried about having to take it off because you'll hit things with it on your Taurus, let me tell you to stop worring.

Unless you hit something that is less than 12 inches from the bottom of the whip, it won't move. I hit tree limbs all the time. The antenna doesn't move. When I pull into my garage is the only time the whip really has to bend. It still doesn't move.

IT WILL BEND FARTHER THAN YOU THINK IT WILL. The whip with the Wilson antennas isn't as thick as the whip with Predators or Monkeymades.

I would get a Wilson 1000 mag mount, stick it on the roof and try it out. If it suits you, then keep it. If it doesn't, I'm sure you could sell/trade it on here.

Just a thought... :Peace!:

That's what I was thinking. So I guess a trunk-mount Wilson 1k is out of the question now.......

I guess I'll just try to get another stinger for my little wil and make another attempt at adjusting it's swr down...

:/
