Lightning - Base system
Lightning - Base system
Not sure if this has been covered or not here.
Base antennas vs Lightning ? whats the deal on that.. Are there things that can be done to help guard agains drawing Lightning?
When I first put up my base antenna probably 10 years ago I stopped at the height im at scared to go much higher in fear of drawing Lightning to my system/home.
And that would be NO GOOD AT ALL.
But with the plans of upgrading my base radio to something better I would like to move my current antenna up to help the new radio get out better.
Im not using a tower. Im using the TV antenna poles like you can get at homedepot. Actually currently im using rolled steel tubing. But id like to take the antenna off the rolled steel and put it ontop of a section of the TVantenna pole (that I currently have my scanner antenna on) and place the tv pole ontop of the rolled steel. This will just about double my current height from the ground.
All this is about 5-6ft outside the window that houses my computer/radio equipt.
How can I safeguard to help prevent Lightning from coming at my antenna or more importantly my home (5ft away from each other). ? ?

More important than height is how good of a ground you have, the better the ground the more likely you will draw in a lightning strike.
If you don't care about the tower getting struck, run some capped pipe or grounding line (from the tower) down and away from your home to a point where you have a good solid piece of copper pipe deep into the ground (like 30 feet+). This will ensure that if the tower gets struck you will pull the lightning away from your house to a much better target.
Best advice is to have a well grounded tower but not a REALLY WELL grounded tower LOL.

Wait... I thought you had this antenna stuff ON A TOWER....
Ok man, pray you don't get struck... my best advice
Seriously, ground the rods to your houses plumbing or buy one of those ground kits they sell to farmers to protect their homes.
Or buy one of these [Please login or register to view this link] and just ground the tower.
That's really tough, by ground it you might just make yourself a bigger target so I can say.. I have no idea.
