Galaxy 2517
Galaxy 2517
Ive been looking to upgrade the base after I upgrading the Mobile. No point in having a better mobile than the base sence I run the base alot more than the mobile.
Whats your thoughts on the Galaxy 2517 SuperWackPacked from RA.. with maby a 636L
Thoughts?? ??
The idea is to have a great base that will talk. and shoot skip and be heard. And heard loud and proud...... BUT
They have moved a few housing developments in my area really close so not keeping down on the TVI is important. the main reason im not looking at some of the big ol 200WATT + radios like the jackson etc..
Thoughts.. thanks!

BigBubbaBD although i have never actually talked on a 2517 thats the base to have around these parts.A lot of the locals talk on them and they sound sweet!!As far as the mic,i would go another route instead of using a 636L.You will benefit more from a power mic on your base.Check ebay, you can find D104's at a reasonable price fairly often.Or give Spark's CB Shack a call.I think thats were Bob got his a at such a good price.
On a side note,a small amp and good antenna(remember the higher the better) will do wonders for your base.I'm only running a 500 watt amp and using a ground plane but I've talked skip all over the US,twice to Canada and several times to Porta Rica and Jamaica.
Oh ya, not really sure why but i have never affected my neighbors TV's.This was something that i was worried about when i hooked up the amp so i called them all on the phone and explained what i was install an amp to my base and let me know if it affected there TV's but so far no complaints. Now my TV......well thats a whole different story

You know I had thought about a D104. But was thinking the 636L for a couple reasons. 1. I usually have the TV on. 2. My computer desk is my base desk and my PC has 4 fans on it, 3. The AC in my computer room is a little louder than the other rooms of the house and 4. My dog, and the living room is the room next door so people are talking.
Wasnt sure how much of that the D104 would pick up. I know ive talked to people before and you could hear the background noise like kids playing and talking and the tv better than you could hear the radio operator.... And I didnt want that.
I already have a base.. little 4watt radio. That ive talked skip on before. If you hit it just right you can get threw somehow. So I know any radio with good audio (like from RA) and more wattage and the 4 I have now will talk 100x better.
As far as antennas. I have one I got from a buddy probably 10 years ago. I have no idea what it is. Its like an antron but only 2 parts instead of 3 and shorter maby 12-14 ft or so.. maby its on of those ProComm things I really dont know. Right now its about 30ft up to the tip. But my scanner antenna is right beside it with the same size pole. If/when I upgrade the base I plann on taking that pole and adding it to the base antenna putting it in the 50-60ft range, adding a few guide wires and calling it a day.
My neighbor has an old Antron with a Ground plane that he no longer uses I havnt heard him fire up the radio in years. Maby I can talk him in to giving me that and Im sure it will be better than the one I have now.

Did you mean to quote your self there frog ?
I like the 2517. I think it is a feature packed package that coveres about everything I want in a base. They are kinda expensive but if you got a 99v and a good power supply you would be at about the same price. You can install it in a rack system or take off the rack ears and set it on a desk.

Same price as?
Thats another thing im looking at. Price vs prices of others vs what radio has what.
Hey, just looking at the RA Website.
What about the RCI2980WX?
The look to be basically the same thing.. power and everything (does this have a built in amp or is it basically the same radio as the 2517?)
Only thing is the RCI2980WX has Weatherband..
Whats the advantage and disadvantage of either or these radios? They look about the same to me as far as looks and features. Does one talk alot better than the other? does one run cleaner than the other (TVI?)

oh joy now I dont know what to do again I cant decide on what one is better than the other.. Both look to be the same wattage on RA's site. But he says on the 2517 something about not having to worry about TVI.
But on the 2980WX it says 50watt also but says nothing about TVI but says its good on SSB and "talk around the world on SSB".
How hard is it to mod to CB?? And does it change any of the other functions? I half way understand that but at the same time I do not.
