If I pull power straight from the battery, why do I see advise on grounding as close to radio as possible. Is grounding at the battery bad?. Need to know the why behind this train of thought, that's just how I learn. Any how thanks for any input.

No, in fact not everyone agrees with the grounding at the radio...me being one of them. It can in fact cause a ground loop. General practice is to run both (+) & (-) from the battery...which is what I've done for the past 30 years without a hitch and never once have had a ground loop.
