Great job!! Seems a lot of us are getting our licenses lately. CB truly is the gateway drug
If you are on a budget and within 10 miles of a couple repeaters an HT can get you on the air 2M and 440. Paired with a J-Pole or slim jim will extend that range quite a bit. There is a guy who makes great slim jim antennas and sells them at a very good price, do some searching and you will find him pretty easily.
If you have a bit more budget then have a look around. Plenty UHF/VHF base and mobiles to choose from, most with 25 - 100 watts of power (an HT is typically 5 watts or less). If you want to get on HF you are limited to a sliver of 10M except for CW, so if you want to use that I would say maybe consider an export from one of our sponsors. Most of them work just as well as any 10 meter radio, just make sure to turn off any echo and roger beeps. Don't tell the other Amateurs I suggested that though, bad things may happen

I use a RCI-2950 on ten meters all the time and I tell the other op's what I'm using too and even turn on the roger beep to prove it.
Just let them say something to me about what I'm using and they'll wish they never did.

I'm guessing not as bad of bad things as the bad things you would do if they said bad things about you or your radio?Night Crawler wrote:What kind of bad things?Radar-DLDN wrote:maybe consider an export from one of our sponsors. What my point is don't worry about what those type of op's think or say there are a lot other people you can talk to that could care less about what type of radio your running.Radar-DLDN wrote:I'm guessing not as bad of bad things as the bad things you would do if they said bad things about you or your radio?
I hear that type of crap all the the time from the old buzzards like me getting on the newbe's but I've been licensed as long and in many cases longer (1975) then them so they better tread lightly when there talking about what type of rig I'm running.
I live in the NYC area and most of the bashing goes on the repeaters around here.
There's always the ones that have been on there everyday single day for years day in day out and use it as their own private line and god help anyone that just wants to break in and say hello.
To the guy that just got his license congratulations and have fun don't be afraid to talk or use whatever radio you want those guys are no better then you.
They put their pants on one leg at a time just like you.
Here's an interesting video I came across about a guys first contact after just being licensed.

Congratulations 1 Adam 12, seems to have been an epidemic among the members on getting tickets the last couple of weeks, now your just 35 questions away from the General ticket.

Fine business! Welcome to the Club of Elite velcro shoe wearing moth ball smelling Amateurs!!! LOL Good luck on getting gear. My advice is to read around before you buy anything. Ask other members who are Hams to help you. Its easier to blow money on this than CB gear, real fast!!

Adam,
Congratulations, and welcome to the vast multitude of the Unwashed Olde Phartes (I'm 61....)
Just a suggestion on rig shopping. If you've got an inkling that you'd like to get on the ham bands below 28 MHz, consider picking up an "all band rig". A decent used one may only set you back around the same $$$ as one of the Super Voltblast 9000 exports (a/k/a 10 Meter radios that don't really cover the part of 10M that you'll have access to with the right mode, and are intended to be made into 11 Meter radios.)
I got an Icom IC-730 a couple of years ago, which had been used long enough to show the (by now) well-documented weak spots (all of which were fixed by resoldering and relay cleaning) for $200, along with a couple of quite old Icom 2M handhelds. The '730 took me about an hour to fix up, a few minutes to enable the WARC bands, and then a good hour on the bench to do a full alignment.
But it's sure nice to have a rig that covers enough bands so that pretty much anywhere in the sunspot cycle, time of year, and time of day, at least *one* band is open to someplace beyond 20 miles. Even reliable local daytime stuff on 75M can go out a few hundred miles with a *very* modest antenna.
There really isn't that much scary stuff on the General exam, especially now without the Morse test.
As it turns out, I operate CW a lot by choice, for fun, and to keep my mind sharp.... hey, you kids! Get off'a my lawn or I'll turn my hose on you! <dang it, where are my keys?!?>
Welcome aboard and 73
