Two Radios at Once

Post by 1 ADAM 12 »

I have an RCI 2980wx (CB-11 meters) and a Yaesu FT-2900R (HAM-2 meters). Would it be harmful to either radio if I have both radios on at the same time while receiving and transmitting? I have already tried this and I see no interference on either radio. Just wondering. Thanks.

How close are they?

I should mention this trick I used yesterday, to prevent RFI between my computer, wireless mouse and keyboard, and my 2985 right on the same desk. It works perfectly, the science is good, just hard to believe, even for radio heads.

Go to a hardware store and buy enough aluminum screen material to make a good barrier between the two radios and amps if any. It's called Bright Aluminum, not painted or coated or fiber.Just one layer, but high and wide enough so it is between the two. This will block all RFI between them, stops it dead. Really. And here is where so many people that know radio, lose it. No, it is not grounded, and it works perfectly never the less. Do a Google on how a screen in a microwave door stops radiation. :icon_e_wink:

I'm betting there is a magnetic coupling to the the 5 sides of the grounded box in a microwave.

Oh, I won't argue that it probably wouldn't hurt to ground it, and when I get done with it, I will ground it. But isn't it interesting that the holes in the screen alone are enough to stop the radio waves, and yet let the light though.

But, back to grounding. I do not know enough of the theory to understand if the screen absorbs the energy, reflects it or what it does and how, but I can assure you, it does stop RFI between my mouse and keyboard and back again. With the amp and radio on and no screen, if I keyed up, Bam, it locked up the mouse pointer and the computer was froze. I had to hit the rest button, Ctrl+Alt+Del did nothing. Keyboard was dead to. If I moved the mouse or keyed the board, I would hear static in the radio, if the amp was off or on and hadn't froze the computer yet. Very annoying.

So, I thought I would mention in relation to what the OP is having problems or potential problems with. Put the screen in place if it's not too ugly and forget about it, your safe.

No
I had a HR-2600 that I used as a remote base coupled to a 2 meter repeater to access 10 meter FM when talking on the 2M repeater.

No problems at all, even if your running a few extra watts. I have been doing it for years. Have my Flex 3K setting on top of my Galaxy DX22.b, with my Yaesu Ft-7900 on top of it. Never a problem, except a little RF in on of my Mac computers from the Flex.
