I would kinda like to know that myself...I'm not sure you could get much lower of a DK on something like a 2x8 to begin with..."Maybe" 180-190w DK if the radio is set to just a half-a-watt...not really sure how it would sound set that low tho.

543FtWorth wrote:"Trying to run a 2x8 on ssb and they say I sound like I ....." what? I may be missing it or maybe I just can't see the full thread title on my phone. What does it sound like?

Everyone has their own way but I deadkey a 4 pill @ 200 watts. I ran my 8 with a 400-500 watt carrier. If the amp is built right it should still swing foreword on an average (bird) meter....any way I thought we were talking ssb.
Yea It got cut off I didn't know there was a limit but last part says (and they say I sound like I need power) like if you we're to be talking with you car turned of and you start to kill the battery that's what I sound like. But I sound like that with the truck on. And yea when I'm on sideband it does swing forward and it will show about over a 1000w on my bird with a 1000w slug. It when I'm on AM that I get the backward swing after the dead key when I start talking.
Do you mean the audio is too quiet? Is there distortion or noise? I feel like I'm missing something. People have already diagnosed the problem before I knew the full complaint.

800 watts deadkey is excessive. Around 400 watts deadkey will be safe if the builder knew what he was doing. I've been using 50 watts per 2987 as a rule of thumb for max deadkey...opinions will vary. At that point you should have some foreword swing on the bird. If not make sure your radio isn't back swinging and causing it.

Originally you asked about ssb. The amp needs a ssb delay. The delay keeps the relay in the amp from chattering while you transmit on ssb.

Someone mentioned biasing. If you have the typical class c (no biasing) competition style amp you probably sound choppy on ssb. You can get away with class c on AM because the deadkey will turn on the pills. Since ssb has no deadkey you need some kind of bias circuit. It supplies current to the base of the transistors to keep them turned on as long as the amp is keyed.
Ok sorry for not being able to explain my self but the reports say that the noise is over powering my voice and they can't understand what I'm saying and that is even if I drop the watts on the radio to 2.5 watts or bring it up to 4 watts same report, with the 2.5 watt dead key on AM side it will dead key about 500w to 600w around that area and with 4 watts it will key up About 800w and withe the drive turnd down to 2.5 it still swings backwards. Yea I do have a ssb switch on the amp for the delay, I don't know if that makes it a bias amp or not.

I wish I new how to do it my self that way I could lower the watts myself instead of taking it to a tech and having time to take it. But I guess I could always start with 1.5 watts and see if that helps and go down from there. I do have a 148gtl that I can start the experiment with before I put Hands on my 2950.

You wouldn't understand. You are one of those guys who splatter +\- 5 channels and thinks it because you are a bad **Censored** while guys running less power get up under you on the fundamental (target) frequency.

Try me. It's a simple question really..."What would you run the carrier at on a 2x8 Amp?" You said 200w's is too high, then you say "Lower" like it should be higher...Now who's the serious one?

You really are that clueless? You're not playing dumb? Ask 543 how to run clean and mean, I bet he don't key 200 and peak 1800. Hey, run 50-100w carrier and get as close as you can to 2kw peak. We all like double side band suppressed carrier, it sounds great on AM

What I'm asking, "Is how are you going to get the carrier that low, on a 2x8 box"...Even on my 2x6, the lowest carrier I can get is still 125-130w with the radio set at just 1/2w...no way I can see you can get a 50w carrier.

Well the latest up date since I dropped the dead key watts to 1/2w drive still doing the same on sideband loud noise and it breaks up when transmitting. still have the back swing on the AM side too what I did notice that when on sideband and 1/2w it will swing up to about 40 watts maybe its to much swim and over modulatingz

I would guess that is a low drive amp and 40 pep watts is to much drive. If the radio has a high and low watt setting use low if not try to lower your top end to say 12 to 15 and see how it sounds if not tweak it lower till you match the amps rated input on the top end.
Sounds like they are telling you your audio is clipping or flat topping that is where you get the distortion from. As you distort more and more and you transmit more junk out on the fundamental frequency and the receiving end will hear that splatter on the frequency your transmitting at along with several k up and down.

Wow, another useless thread, ssb is **Censored** with class c. Every brand amp is different. You need to do a lot more research on how to sound good, and it won't happen with a cb rig. The class c just makes it worse. Depending how the input is done 2w can do 50 or 300w . And are you kidding me when you say your relying on radio checks for quality purposes. Do your amp a favor and keep to am. UNDERDRIVE....last longer sound better. By the way what brand amp

It is entertaining how the diagnostics experts can solve issues on the fly. Aside from a class c amp not really fitting for ssb, a 145 amp alternator that has to power a big rig plus your setup is a stretch. And I'm assuming you are running big welding cable sized wire so it is getting all the amperage it can. Starving an amp as far as amperage can kill audio quality. Is there any way you could just bypass the driver transistors so it can be ran as a straight 8 box? The final 8 pills don't need anywhere near the power that the 2x part of the combo is capable of delivering. A 1x8 is really closer to the sweet spot and just a minimal amount of drive can tickle the driver pills to where they overdrive the amp in a hurry.

In thinking about it a little more, having trouble trying to sound good on ssb with a class c amp is kind of like saying "I just don't understand why, but my corvette does 185 down the highway but I can't understand why it sucks at rock crawling."

Glad we can entertain you  If you can't add anything use full without submitting to sarcasm then read another thread. If a thread
disconcerted me that much i had to resort contumelious exposition I would go read a kardashian thread some where. That's is my two cents.

Sorry for the sarcasm but I did offer solution related info, most of it similar to what others have done, in an effort to help the guy out.

This thread is long. It may be understood but how much you deadkey on am wont have any effect on how you sound on ssb. There's a lot of good info posted and some not.

I can not find where the guy says he has a class c amp. I don't think the man that owns it is even for sure. Some pics of the inside would give it away. I mentioned earlier that if it was class c it would sound bad on ssb....people ran with that and now they're talking down to the guy about his amp. Just because it was homemade doesn't mean there's no biasing.

This thread went from a guy needing advice to a whizzing match very quickly.

....good to see you chime in Drdx. It seems like years since I've heard you on the radio.

Not the first time that's happened!

I'm just going to sit-back and over modulate my 1-pill, and bleed 40 channels up and down, while sniffing battery acid in my living room from all the car battery's I have stashed under the card table, and see where else this thread go's....
