Electro Voice 719 wiring

#347469

Post by BobCB »

I recently picked up an old Electro Voice 719 dynamic desk mic for $10. I'm not sure what kind of radio it was used with in the past, or if it was used with a PA system or something because it has a 1/4" stereo phono plug on it. I found the manual online and it says it can be used with ham and CB radio in addition to PA systems. The manual shows a wiring diagram but the wires in my mic aren't the same as the ones listed. From what I've read these mics are supposed to be good for SSB.

Mine has a clear wire, shield, white w/ black stripe, and white w/ red stripe. Can anyone point me in the right direction? How would I wire this up to a 4 pin Cobra radio? Is it even possible to do that?

On the phono plug the clear wire goes to the sleeve, the white w/ red stripe goes to the tip, and the shield and white w/ black stripe both go the the sleeve.

judging only by your description of what wires are where on the present conector i would make an educated guess that tip is audio but thats as much of a guess im willing to make.

Hey BobCB,
On most radios that use a 1/4" phono plug the tip is audio, the ring is TX, and the sleeve is ground but the way you describe the wiring that might not be right. Look at the shield and see which wire is inside it, that would be the audio lead there the other 2 wires are TX and RX. I found the instructions for the mic but the colors are just like you said, and missing the green wire. looks like it is time to get the multimeter out and find the switching wires and the rest is easy.

Did some more poking and prodding and found that there is a solid green wire but it is not connected to anything in the 1/4 phono plug or the base of the mic itself. Odd.

I don't know how the PTT switch on desk mics is usually set up but according to mine the bare shield wire and the clear wire both connect to the lower part of the PTT while the white w/ black wire connects to both the upper and lower part of the PTT. The white w/ red strip connects to only the upper part of the PTT. When I say "PTT" I'm talking about the little metal tabs that touch together when you push the PTT button.

Any ideas? There is no wire inside of the shield, it's just bare wire.

I may have made a typo in my original post. The clear wire goes to the ring. The white w/ red stripe goes to the tip. And the bare shield and white w/ black stripe go the the sleeve. The green wire goes nowhere and is not connected to anything in the base of them mic either.

Okay the mic has a green wire, great so the wiring to try would be for a Cobra, Uniden or Galaxy 4 pin radio, you didn't say what you wanted to hook it up to,

pin 1 - shield and red stripe
pin 2 - clear or white
pin 3 - black stripe
pin 4 - green

Try that and see if it works.
