for the quick response....let me explain where I am at and what confuses me.

After reading about someone in the forum putting the base on the tire carrier mount on a Jeep, I drilled a hole in the 1/4 inch bracket on my Jimmy.

BUT if I put the threaded bolt through that hole, it makes contact with both the threads and the nut...therefore being grounded.

I'm not sure how to secure the ball without making contact.

I need to locate the little screw for the end of the threaded bolt as well.

IF that inner core (which I refer as the hot) attaches there, then everything else that conducts must be ungrounded...so let's start there...how do I secure the ball/thread section without grounding it to the metal mounting surface...?

Maybe this side view pic will help you understand how the flush ball mount assembly should work. I threw this together for a fellow Jeeper who was having similar problems.

Hope that helps answer the question(s) a little bit.

it does...means the pressure of holding the unit is on the four screws...and the hole must be way bigger to avoid contact....gotcha!

THANKS!

Exactly. The vehicle is the other half of the antenna for all practical purposes. Typically the mount isolator plate will either be plastic with a gasket, and/or metal with isolators and gasket. Either way, the isolator plate keeps the antenna from grounding (one way or another). What I do on set ups like these (which my Jeep has) is I simply hook the shielding (probably one of the most important connections) with a self tapping SS screw. Here's a pic of my Jeep's ball mount;

here's what I have done.

I drilled a 1/2 inch hole in the top section of the rear tire mount. That's not a lot of room for that threaded section. I drilled a small hole in the bottom plate to pass the small screw through and screwed it into the threaded unit.

Two holes I drilled passed through the plate, the other is much deeper metal.

Anyway I then tapped them 1/4-20 as I had some bigger screws in that pattern. I opened up the plate and plastic section with a drill. I should not that it is THREE screws that hold the unit and not four as I stated earlier.

I also like using some larger diameter stock than the originals.

I hooked it up..and I was getting some bad grounding even after I wrapped that threaded bolt with electical tape.

Next I plan to either open up that 1/2 hole to allow the nut to pass through like maybe with the jig saw or...get a nylon sheath for it.

If this doesn't work, out comes the drill and I'll go through the body...it's a 94 Jimmy and not meant to be the "pretty" mobile. It is my daily driver and has 4x4 at the push of a button and can pull my trailers.

I also have a stock 1976 CJ7....which I may get an antenna mount and CB ready....right now it seems that the Jimmy is first.

I went to the local yard and pulled the heater control unit out of a Blazer and got some donor parts. I thought maybe I'd find a CB mount on a vehicle...some 40 vehicles and no such luck.

Since the rear luggage hinge is screwed on...another option is to make my own bracket.

Thanks for the great pics...when I get mine up and matched I'll take some pics.
