Re: what shortwave do you have?
I bought my son an old Heathkit SW-7800 off ebay just before Christmas. Radio worked pretty decent out of the box but I went ahead and did a complete cap upgrade and a few other mods to quiet it down a bit. Now I must say it works extremely well. It still picks up a bit more noise than my Kenwood TS-430 transciever in AM mode but it is surprisingly quiet for noise on SSB. I coupled it to a 100 ft. longwire stringing thru the trees and am pleasantly surprised to the sensitivity of the old machine. I think once we move from this apt. complex to our new home in feb. that it will do much better than it does now due to much less interference from wireless routers, cable modems and the like. Even my Kenwood and my mobile radios pick up excessive noise here, so much that I rarely transmit from this location. I plan on running a beverage antenna for it at the new location.

Re: what shortwave do you have?
I just bought an Aircastle 162F1H. It is my first SW so I'm not sure what freq to tune to. One thing I don't like is no SSB. Hopefully I can make a BFO circuit for SSB listening.

For sure ,get going on the BFO mod as utility signals are about the best thing going these days.Grinder74 wrote:I just bought an Aircastle 162F1H. It is my first SW so I'm not sure what freq to tune to. One thing I don't like is no SSB. Hopefully I can make a BFO circuit for SSB listening.

Re: what shortwave do you have?
I have a Kenwood R-2000. A lot of people tell me it's a really good radio. I mostly use it to bring in my local AM Broadcast stations at night because tuners in most store bought radios these days are junk!

Re: what shortwave do you have?
My primary SWL rig is a Ten Tec Argonaut V slaved to a Ten Tec Corsair. I've had several RS portables over the years as well as the 394 but my Tecsun 660 seems to outperform all that older RS stuff.
Currently running an Antron, a 40m doublet and a 460' longwire. Yeah, I like to get into some longwave from time to time using an old railroad telegraph variable voltmeter as a receiver.

Re: what shortwave do you have?
My primary SW is a R75 which I use mainly for Utility listening. Also use a Yaesu FRG-7700 that I have had since 1983. Portables are an old DX390 and G5 Grundig.

Re: what shortwave do you have?
How about an old Philco stand up model. Give it time to warm up and it works just fine. My father bought it new in the early 40's. Gotta love the old tube sets.

Re: what shortwave do you have?
When I purchased my house (built in 1917) in 87' there was an old Admiral radio in the corner of the living room, hooked up to a wire antenna that is strung through the walls and attic on knob & tube insulators, (the original house wiring used the same things). The radio was a 1937 Admiral model K table radio, AM broadcast/shortwave receiver with an immaculate dial and walnut case. I replaced the speaker material (original owner smoked cigars) with a design from the era and what tubes it needed. It would still be there today if it wasn't for my wife (enough said on that subject).

Just picked up a Tecsun PL-880. Amazing radio for its size and blows away my Grundig S450DLX.

Re: what shortwave do you have?
Soviet made portable receiver Okean 209. Purchased it from web auction at last winter.
They sold here the same set named as "Selena" in eighties as an entry level DX- receiver.
25m, 30m, 40m 48-51m and 50-76m SW bands, MW and LW.
It also has FM, but frequency band is around 70MHz, not used here.
I think the performance on MW and LW is really good.

Tecsun PL660, great little performer for my use
Bought the PL880 when they first came out a few years back but the SSB was very poor, returned it
Anyone know if the firmware issue was fixed?
