I just got my Wilson 5000 Mag Mount. Would mounting it on the roof of my car instead of on the trunk give me significantly better performance? I'd have several feet of exposed cable running from the front of the trunk lid up to the center of the roof....
Dead center of vehicle will give you the very best ground plane. If you chose to mount it on the trunk make sure you have enough clearance between antenna and back windshield when the trunk is open. So you wont damage anything.
I put the antenna in the center of the roof, with about 4 feet of cable exposed down the back window and into the trunk. Will the coax stand up to the Texas sun (it was 104 degrees here today)?
It should hold up pretty well, I have about three feet exposed on the mirror bracket of my big truck and never had any problems from exposure, I'd be more worried about it not getting pinched when you open and close trunk lit.
Every cars got a sweet spot. Ive put on antennas on alot of caprices and the dead center stinks! For some reason they like to be more towards the back. But anyway, since height is might.........that says it all!!
