HG M75 Mic questions
I ordered this mic with the idea that it might boost the tx w to my pa even just a smidge. I see mixed reviews on this mic here, but generally on the world pipe they get good reviews. Maybe Cobra has made them better lately? The pa is rated up to 15w so this mike, along with the dyna-mic on the 29 LX, the m75, and a little extra help in the 29, might make this pa the bane of idjits on my local roads or whatever idiocy I come up with.
We have so many citified deer that anterovirus is rampant in these 'dumb' populations; yet all these, ahem, liberals want them around to contribute to their disneylandic nature tableaus; a strong pa could raise some eyebrows certainly.

Re: HG M75 Mic questions
I'm asking if someone thinks the powered mic will put a little more power to the pa speaker?

Re: HG M75 Mic questions
agree...well, maybe not with that particular Mic....Cobra Mic's would not be my first choice...or second, third, for as that go's, they wouldn't even be on my list...Sporty Mike wrote:Sure it will.

Re: HG M75 Mic questions
Biskinik , yes an amplified power mic will make your PA audio louder. Is that Cobra power mic a good one...NO.
Go with an Astatic D104 Mb6,Road Devil , or an RF Limited EC 2018.

I have a couple road devils and they have a crunchy sound if you dont hold your hand as still as a statue once you key. Other then that super annoyance they are great but I will never buy another due to this fact.

Re: HG M75 Mic questions
It seems from reviews around the net that people generally liked the mic (I'd say 75% positive reviews) but then who knows what they had before so it might be relative. People that seem to have more experience with radios and mics highly recommend a set of mods that are fairly easy; once in place they really like this mic. So if I'm not happy with it as is, I'll do the mods. Some have even said that this mic with the mods is better than the asiatic with it's peculiarities. I guess we'll just have to see! I'll let you all know-

Re: HG M75 Mic questions
EXACTLY! This is the main, and ONLY reason I won't have another Road Devil Mic...You would think for what they charge for that Mic, they would use a higher grade of plastic...This is why I only buy the RF Limited Extreme 2018's for Power Mic's.Lost Ram wrote:I have a couple road devils and they have a crunchy sound if you dont hold your hand as still as a statue once you key. You can crush on the Mic, wiggle it around in your hand, and never hear any crunching sounds...Not to mention they are around the same price, if not cheaper than the Astatic, plus you get TB and echo...

I like the sound of the RF Limited CR577, it's the little brother of the Extreme 2018, just doesn't have the special effects.

Re: HG M75 Mic questions
Okay, so I got the mic today: by simple comparison testing, it is an noticeable improvement on the stock mic that came with the Cobra 29 LX. The PA is noticeably louder, and the swing on the tx is a tick or two higher. That's with 10 on the mic dial. It 'feels' better in the hand, overall, than the stock mic. Since I just discovered my local Radio Shack does have a full board building aisle, I'm going to do the mods suggested by a well done document online (look up "Cobra HG M75 Power Mic fix/upgrade (+20dB gain)"). By all accounts, the mods will take it into the impressive zone. We'll see.

So I got paid today and went to RS to get the components for this mod. I'm new to this, so when I went to get a 220ohm resistor, I was stymied by the different values, i.e. 1 watt, 1/2 watt, 1/4 watt. I'm looking at the wikipedia page on electronic color codes, but it's not terribly self-evident what this mic has, as in which end is the left and thus the starting color in identifying the type of resistor that's already on there?
I'd appreciate any advice anyone might have about how to determine which resistor I need. I saw a thread showing color coding on here, so I' go check that out too.
Thanks-

Alright, after a crash course, I figured out, basically what the color codes mean, and generally which wattage (size) of the resistor I should use. I'll go for the 1/2 or 1/4 watt, whatever size matches the one already in there. If I'm way off, let me know!

Alright, I'm going to 'fess up here: I finally got my soldering bench up to speed for electronic soldering (I've done soldering/brazing for gunsmithing and jewelry, but not circuit boards . . . until now) and went to work on the HG M75 project mods to up the db. Well, I learning to solder electronics alright, but I screwed up the wiring and now I can't get the thing to work But I'm not a quitter so I'm going to keep cleaning up my solder mess and try to reconstruct the proper wiring. For the price of the mic and some more equipment on my bench, I've got some more learning to do, which is always worth it (to me). I should of taken a pic before I started, because after I removed the caps and resistors, (remember I'm learning to solder circuit boards for the first time) I lost track of where the other wires were soldered and they broke loose as it's a very tiny board. Oh well! This is par for me, but like I say, this is how I learn. AND, just cause I wanted to get a good mic going regardless, I ordered an Astatic D104 MB 6.
