Post by family guy »

Can you guys help me out once again?? I just today picked up my cobra 29 and have an 102 on the back of my truck. My question is...can you set the SW R's on the whip?? How?? I have a spring on top of a ball, and my SW R's are high. Should i remove the ball?? what bis a good way to ground the antenna?? (just to make sure I'm OK in that respect) It is mounted on the rear bumper. Or if you guys could throw me into some reading about it That will help also. Thanks guys

If you have a spring on the 102, and have high SWR's, sounds like a grounding problem,,,just run a ground wire off of the mout srews to the body/frame and see if that lowers the SWR's,,,don't use the SWR meter in the Cobra 29,,,use an external meter

What he said!

If your swr is hitting 3.0 or higher, then you probably have a ground short somewhere...I would first make sure the mount itself has a good ground.
Then check your conectors. (coax conectors)

Also with the mount, be sure your useing any plastic washers, which came with the mount. If not, you can ground-out the whip.

Attach one end of the wire to one of the bolts on the mount bracket... Attach the other end to somewhere on the vehicle chassis... Then check your swr's.

please note: that is NOT an *electrical* ground--although it would serve as that...it's meant to be an SWR ground. lightning won't ask my opinion, but the antena is mounted metal-to-metal on the bumper, which is, itself, grounded.

for one thats WAY TOO WRONG and it will damage your radio.... now by looking @ the pick your antenna is probly way to close to your tailgate meaning the signal if reflecting off of it and coming back though the antenna. if you can extend it out a little bit farther from the bumper with a mount and see if that helps any.. also look up into radios 101 i have a writeup you could use as for ideas on grounding your system.

Just ground the base of the mount, run a wire down to the bed/body of the truck,,look here at this

this is a pic of BigBubbaBD setup,,,look at the blue ground wire,,,,DO NOT ground the spring,,,your making it worse,,,,

i'll remove that...

can't remove the post...but disregard that tip, and i'll go yank that.

yes, it is close to the tailgate...no other place to put it. it's a 2001 jeep that's still worth $13,000...not going to go punching holes in the body!

go get a peice of mettal and make and extension braket or make yourself a new mount get it a little father away from the bumper and the cab. dont have to punch new holes just use the ones you allredy have.

I ran a ground wire off the base to the frame and am still getting the same swr reading. My next choice of action is to come off the bumper like in previous replies. i can talk out though and i still receive but the ant warning light keeps coming on. I haven't been using the radio allot just to do the tests with a friend that lives a couple blocks away.

Is there any disadvantage/ problem with mounting the antenna to the tool box of the truck, as long as everything is properly grounded?
