Wilson Antenna Question

#38599

Post by Shane »

Hey guys I was browsing around the net last night and I see where wilson is offering a Short Whip for the 500,1000,5000 series of antenna ...So instead of a 62 stinger you get a 39" loaded stinger so my question is , How much decrease of performance would you see with a loaded whip on a wilson 1000 ....The short whip would be a nice option for people with height restrictions ...So does anyone run one of these ? I am curious is all :)

sure don't, but they should work in theory,,,center load antennas seem to work better than base loads, (open coil ect) I would think it would work well,,I just emailed someone about this, its Gordon's truck pic I posted and asked him to comment

Hello BigBopper & DxKnight1, although I have never owned anything to compare it with other than a fiberglass antenna, I have no complaints with the performance of the 39" short load....it works great!...tons better than the fiberglass. The SWP General has great ears with this antenna and I've had no problem transmitting. I talk regularly with locals ranging from 10 to 15 miles in the evenings with or without the RA250 on. The only ones I will lose is those with directional antennas when they are turned away from me. Even then, they can still hear me enough to turn their beams and we talk away. Additionaly, I have transmitted & received up to approximately 25/30 miles on good days and even across states with the help of skip. Still isn't quite short enough to clear all of the ATM booths & restaurant drive throughs while mounted on top of my Dodge Ram, but I'll either not go through or let 'er bend.

I know someone who has one. And they are OK, as long as your running a bearfoot radio. Not sure exactly how many watt's they are supost to handle, but if you want to see "Fireworks", try and run 500w's threw one!

The small center-load wont handle many watt's. But for city talking down the highway, they work just fine.

But it's NOT a DX antenna

From Wilson's site
The Wilson Short Load

Have a height limitation? Can't get into the garage? The overpass is too low?

If you have this problem and you need a short antenna, but want the maximum performance that the height limitation puts on you, then the Wilson Short Load is the answer!

Designed for maximum efficiency, it is only 3ft short and replaces the 62" whip that is standard for the Wilson 1000 and the Wilson 5000.

It will also replace the 49" whip that is standard on the Trucker 2000 & 5000 for those drivers concerned about their height restrictions.

The band width will still be wide enough for most uses - 1-1.2 MHz, and the power handling is a strong 500 watts.

The Short Load adapts to the Wilson 500 and all models of the Wilson 1000, 5000, Trucker 2000 and the Trucker 5000.

The perfect solution for those height problems.

That sounds about right, what Wilson is claimimg...However somewhat missleading. Because their talking of "Peak Watt's" and not RMS or "Bird" watts... And depending on what meter your useing, peak watt's can vary as much as 200 to 300 watt's...

Best thing to do if your going to run this kind of stinger, is NOT to run a amp, with more than 2-2879's in it...And not more than 13.5 volts...

I've had no problems/fireworks with the RA250 amp. What is in it? How many watts does it put out? I'm assuming 250?

Your probably right thou. Probably 250 peak watt's, depending on the radio.
