In state contact

Was on the radio last evening. Had a couple of guys rag chewing on 38 LSB. I made a few shoutouts. 428 Montana responded and was talking about his 1k watt setup. About 11 pm 132 interior Alaska shouted my call sign. We had conditions for a,couple of hours. I decided to turn off my box. I couldn't believe I was dxing barefoot. He commented that 12 watts was plenty to DX around the world. About 1 am before I turned off the radio I made a shoutout. 132 came on the air, we still had in state conditions. He turned his antenna toward Australia, made a call with no response. I switched my box on and made a shoutout. He commented that that call had some kick to it and I sounded crystal clear. I didn't let him know I was using a box. We didn't hear anyone else on the air.

Could have been ground waves, I get that every now and then,, make a few good trips to Ocean City, MD. over 90 miles away, too close to be skip. Anyway any contact is a good contact.

I love DXing with minimum power . I will often DX using just one or two watts. I also like using my Magnum 1012 handheld to DX . Lots of power isn’t necessary. You can DX using a walkie talkie if it has a good BNC antenna and conditions permit. I like using the least amount of power to DX, where many people like to use as much power as they can. I find the more difficult the challenge the sweeter the victory. I would rather make 2 DX contacts using my walkie talkie vs making 20 contacts using my mobile or base setups.

I think it was ground waves. Delta Junction is prolly around 300+ miles away. Was not normal skip conditions.

Trying to find "In State" contacts means you have to spend some time surfing the channels. Best times are usually during travel times, like when locals are driving to and from their work 20's. Here is where a cheap "no adjacent channel rejection" radio would come into play, just chase the bleed over.
