Feedbacl/distortion on MIC? - help

#390357

Post by EVH5150 »

Hello,

Using my 3rd Galaxy DX959B that has been super tuned, had a swing kit installed and dual Mosfets with Turbo Echo board. Just got it last week.

For a week now Ive been troubleshooting this MIC feedback/Distortion issue. Disconnected external speaker, used 3 mics (Astatic, Ranger and default mic), replaced Power Charger. Have an SWR of just below 1.4. using a Wilkson 5000 mag mount on the hood passenger side. whole set up works perfectly on my previous radio's, just not this one. Charger (Cig lighter outlet) is direct connected to Battery. Used with MIC gain down, talkback down, echo off all sorts of stuff.. still the same.

With the ignition off (I have a 4 door jeep Wrangler JK), the Radio and MIC work PERFECTLY!!.. with Ignition on and car running, I get terrible feedback/distortion on the mic. Receiving ia always ok, no engine whine or anything.

Only thing left I can think of is, move the Antenna to another place?.. direct connect to the Battery?.. do I really need to replace the entire Antenna, that's my last resort. Remember though before replying.. .. Radio and MIC work "Perfectly" when my Jeep is not running (Ignition off)?

Any help please?

.....Regards

Oh well.. replying to myself...
[mod=Bozo] please be more patient in waiting for replies [/mod]
I wired direct to the battery, same problem, I moved the Antenna to a different place, same problem, I replaced the Antenna with a brand new one, got 1.3 SWR on Channel 1 and Channel 40, still.. same problem.

Reverted back to my previous DX959B rig and no issues, might not be as powerful as the super duper one I just got a week ago, but still. I fear I need to send this new DX959B CB back. I think the dual Mosfets are just too sensitive.
.. Regards, Eddie

I have a DX959, I don't use the stock mic. I have a Superstar DM-1000 Tornado, it's a power/echo mic. Works great. But you need to watch what your mic gain is set to. If mine is too high, i do get feedback and distortion. So make sure you watch that.

Hello EVH5150,
Welcome to the forum. It sounds like the radio has been over tuned, when the vehicle isn't running the nominal voltage is around 12.6v, running it jumps up to upwards of 14+v, I believe that is causing the feedback. Only way to correct this is to have it retuned in my opinion but you could try a couple snap bead ferrites on the mic cord and run a case ground from a screw on the radio's case to a good electrical ground.
As a new member I always ask if you could post an intro in the "Welcome to the Forum" topic, click here, [Please login or register to view this link] , so other members can say "Hi", thanks.

I was thinking the same as MD. Greg you took the words outta my mouth. Might be that with the voltage jump from Jeep off to running you are over driving things a bit.

Hi All,
Thank you for the replies, I removed the radio, tried it in another vehicle that was set up already for CB radio use, and same issue. I have it packaged up to send back to seller. Using my previous Galaxy DX959B without issues. It may well be over-tuned.

I just wanted to give a quick update. I am returning the DX959B back to the seller. I have just ordered the Stryker S655-HP instead, should be arriving this week. Fingers crossed, all will go well (I hope), thanks for the feedback guys.

That Stryker is an excellent AM (has FM too) radio, conversion is easy, (needs a dummy diode removed), right out of the box a talking radio. I think you will be pleased if you only talk AM. I believe our sponsor, GI Joe's has the best price around that that particular radio.

Would have been an interesting experiment to check the Galaxy on a power supply with about 14v to see if you had the same issue

I don't know who you bought it from but radios like a Galaxy can take some tuning. The thing to me is the shop or tech (please don't tell me, he's probably not a sponsor) is doing this tuning in what I call "A Perfect World", all the tools you need (maybe) and a perfect load to adjust it with. That is not the case in the "Real World", long power leads, non existent grounds, no bonding of vehicle parts, out of this world SWR readings, you get what I'm talking about. Don't believe all the hype about "Super Tuning", a mild tune and sounding good will out talk any of those.

I am super new to this so this is what I have found on my RCI 2995dx I do have the Talk Back Feature and tried it out. and unless I'm practically touching my lips to the mic I have a distorted sound. I had originally started like 3 4 inches away with the distortion being a big problem but now all is well. I am pushing a few extra watts. but again this may not apply to your problem hope you get it going. lets us know.

Yep, i have a DX959. And i have to stand back a good 5-6 ft to avoid feedback. But also need to watch where you mic gain is set at.
