Re: HG 2x4 kicker
The simple formula is 10 amps per pill and then add extra for the power supply to have some breathing room. The same would apply installed in a vehicle.

Re: HG 2x4 kicker
If you drive the snot out of it. I have seen 85A draw+ from a 1x4. A 2x4 will draw a little more. I hope your at least using a single final radio and not an export.
Re: HG 2x4 kicker
so are you telling me a dual final radio cannot be tuned properly to run a 2x4?

Re: HG 2x4 kicker
Most dual final radios put out 40+ watts pep. Dumping that into a 2 pill, the 2 pill will put out 200w+ pep. Dumping that into a 4 pill. It won’t last long. Unless the builder of the 2x4 really attenuated the input on 2 pill.

Re: HG 2x4 kicker
I had a 2x4 Davemade...Best to use something like a Cobra 29 or any single final radio that doesn't have allot of swing.... (1-2w DK, swinging "UNDER" 10w's is all you need)...Let the driver stage of the Amp do it's deal! ...should see between 700-900w's...swingdaddy212 wrote: November 30th, 2018, 11:24 am so are you telling me a dual final radio cannot be tuned properly to run a 2x4?
Don't advise volting it either if you want to keep it...
Dual final radio will fry it.

Re: HG 2x4 kicker
2x4’s were really made for radios like the Grant and 148’s that only did about 15w pep.

Re: HG 2x4 kicker
i appreciate everyone's input and at the same time would like to respectfully disagree. if it has been tuned and matched to the P.A. there should not be a problem.

Re: HG 2x4 kicker
You never said what radio you would be pushing it with. Since you said "matching", this is telling me the radio was "detuned" to drive the amplifier.

Re: HG 2x4 kicker
So your using this for a P.A. system and not for a CB radio?swingdaddy212 wrote: December 1st, 2018, 9:22 am i appreciate everyone's input and at the same time would like to respectfully disagree. if it has been tuned and matched to the P.A. there should not be a problem.
It will work with a General Lee or other dual final radio for a while, it will just sound a little muffled from being over modulated, and bleed over half the other channels, but for some strange reason there's people out there that think that sounds good...
In the end, it's your toy, so you can play with it however you see fit! ...enjoy.

Re: HG 2x4 kicker
sorry. power amplifier.
yeah i guess you could call it a de tune of the radio.
the radio is a dx 99v2. i guess it must have some type of attenuation built into it. the builder said it would run well with a 100 watt key and swing about 40 pep into it. he also shows a galaxy 88 driving the amp. his is a dual final.
ill post a video of it on my scope when i get setup. i just need to build a rf sampler to handle the power.
and if i am wrong and does not work out ill post that as well

swingdaddy212 wrote: January 20th, 2019, 10:30 am well at least a dx99v2 is too much for a 2x4. i can get it tuned low enough on A.M. to drive the amp but then SSB is not enough to drive it. and if i tuned it for SSB to drive the amp properly then A.M. is too much for the amp.
i was wrong.......

Yep...been there done that...swingdaddy212 wrote: January 20th, 2019, 10:30 am well at least a dx99v2 is too much for a 2x4. i can get it tuned low enough on A.M. to drive the amp but then SSB is not enough to drive it. and if i tuned it for SSB to drive the amp properly then A.M. is too much for the amp.

another option would be to either by-pass the driver stage and use it as a 4-pill, or have a switch installed so you can turn off the driver stage to use with a dual final radio, then flip the switch to activate the driver stage for a single final radio....so you still have some options.

Re: HG 2x4 kicker
yes i have thought about having the amp builder remove the driver section. i just got a stryker 955 with irf520 fets in it and this thing rocks and works great with my 3 element beam and would like to use it on a good size amp.
hey jessiejames. you seem to know what time it is... what kind of carrier would you recommend for a texas star dx400v with 4 toshiba 2290s, is 100 watts too much for this amp?

Re: HG 2x4 kicker
Should be OK at 100w. I have my base box's at 100w and they both have driver stages, so a straight 4-pill should be fine.swingdaddy212 wrote: January 20th, 2019, 8:22 pm yes i have thought about having the amp builder remove the driver section. i just got a stryker 955 with irf520 fets in it and this thing rocks and works great with my 3 element beam and would like to use it on a good size amp.
