Amp compatible with SSB?

#393071

Post by Cutlass327 »

OK, I have a Palomar TX250, Palomar 250 Elite, and a shooting star 225 plus. The elite needs fixed.

I have tried the TX250 on SSB, it doesn't seem to have the delay to stay on fo the SSB use, it clicks a lot as I talk. The Elite has the SSB/AM switch. The 225 plus has no switch, have yet to try it on SSB.

Do I need to have the Elite fixed to run amp on SSB, or do the others work ok? I have not had anyone reply to my skip calls, so I do not know if it is working for SSB.

Is there something to modify the TX250 to work for SSB?

what you are hearing is called relay chatter, very bad for the relay. when amplifiers have a SSB delay switch, when turned on it puts a capacitor inline in the keying circuit to keep the relay energized for a certain amount of time after you transmit (a delay). in SSB mode, you need that delay to keep the amp in transmit mode during the quiet spots in between speech. if not the relay will have to open and close really fast to keep up with your speech. and that speed is so fast it sounds like, yup! relay chatter. now to keep things simple for you, the amplifiers you have that do not have a SSB delay switch are more than likely class c amplifiers which are primarily used for AM mode, they dont sound all that good on SSB. the amplifiers you have that do include a SSB switch are more than likely class ab1 or b which does sound good on SSB. you can have a capacitor put in your non SSB amps so you can use them on ssb but there is a chance they wont sound to good, BUT they might. some class c amps sound meh, ok on ssb, just not great. so its kinda up to you, buy an amp / fix yours that has the delay (ab1) or have the delay put in your non SSB amps and hope they sound good.

Thank you for the reply. Looks like I'll have the Elite fixed. It would be better on AM too, wouldn't it?

All 3 are a 2 pill or mosfet amps. Most Palomar amps are biased but I don't think the TX model had a cap to stop the chatter not saying one could not be added to the circuit. The Elite should already be capped for SSB and the Shooting Star is just a copy of the Palomar's. The TX is the older of the bunch, I would get it up and going first.
FYI, when you cap a relay without adding a switch, using AM there will be a pause before it closes to receive.

The Elite is an AB1, auto SSB. Says right on the front label.

I'm going to look into getting it fixed, it has a blown cap and what was said was the switching transistor. I believe I had the DX88HL on high when I keyed up one day....

Yep,, that will let the smoke out of a little amp.
