The drift problem only effects sideband use, on AM it could drift a 200hz and you would still sound fine to the receiving party. No matter it was a good price for that radio.

I understand the SSB deal, I just didnt know if they ever addressed the SSB drift in the Galaxy. I know my 99v was really bad when cold. Then again maybe it was just the export type???? Never had the Galaxy CB/SSB to compare to the export with SSB.

Its more efficient, and you can talk further most of the time with SSB. Listen to 38LSB when you can or any other frequency you hear with SSB. Its easy to get the hang of it, at first its a little weird. I didnt for many years but, now its my go to communication type.

Side band can be a lot of fun! Jump on a channel and start talking, you never know what'll happen.

SSB is absolutely the way to go. But honestly that 949 will only be so-so on sideband. Out of the 5 949's and 6 959's that I own, only 2 of them are stable on sideband. One I modified to stay stable, the other came that way. They do ok, but you will be best friends with your clarifier, lol. Also most of the time the galaxy 9x9 radios require you to tie the RX and TX together on the clarifier (usually not done from the factory). 959's and 949's are some of my favorite mobile radios for AM, and I can routinely get 18-25PEP pretty easy and still look good on the scope here in the shop. You got an good price btw. Just my penny in the well...cheers!

Yessir, anytime. I saw where you had posted that you never use SSB. May i humbly suggest you give it a shot. There are some really cool contacts to make on SSB, and nearly everyone I have talked to is Old School with their radioing. I personally love AM side, and some of my fondest radio memories are on AM, but so far as skip shooting goes, there is some real fun to be had on SSB. There is something really cool about bare-footing 1000mi +. Again, just my penny in the well. Hope to hear you out there someday. On SSB I go by 942, south central bluegrass. Gimmie a holler if we cross antennas!

Cheers :D

And as a side note, just an FYI, not sure if you talk much outside of the 40 channels, but the uppper and lower mod, specifically the 2 switch mod and the 10kc switch mod, work flawlessly on a 949 and 959. And better yet you wont loose power outside of AM40. Not something you see much. They are awesome radios, especially when they are set up right. PM me if you want to know some of my tricks for this radio... ;)

Nice deal, Galaxy radios get a bad rap because of the drifting problem but that can be fixed with the clarifier mod, if you only do AM then there really isn't a problem.
