HELP- Galaxy 98 vhp stuck in transmit

#393919

Post by mjenkins »

My galaxy dx 98vhp when i turn it on it stays keyed all the time even without mic plugged in..........and when i turn my talk-back switch on all it does is squeal. Now the weird part is it doesn't do this all the time, just periodically....sometimes its fine, then for no reason it'll peg the meter and squeal, of course i immediately turn it off and it might work tomorrow or it might be a day or two but it'll start working again for how ever long it wants to....Any and all help would be greatly appreciated,

sounds like you may either have a bad solder joint some where on the board or s piece of solder moving around inside the radio. when I have one like this I take a pencil with an eraser on and pouch around on the board to see if I can find the location that is causing this then resolder that area. a good pair of strong glasses will help to see the bad spot.

Look for the typical cold solder joint. Before you open it up give it a good shake to see if there could be a loose item, say a spot of solder, screw, etc., bouncing around inside it but my guess is a solder joint.

on the newer radios MDY I have found so many with bad solder joints. the last ones I have found with bad solder is the superstar 121 radios. the solder pads are not very good around the audio IC, I have had to put short jumper wires to make a good connection to the IC. found a bunch over the last few years that when you would tighten the bracket mount screws the radio would die. loosen the studs and RX would come back. looks like most of the solder pads by the IC were not made full like they should be. where some of the parts went through the board the pad would be about 1/2 the size it should have been and the solder would not make good contact to the board and part through the hole.
be sure the board ground screws are all tight also.

I have a DX94HP with the same problem. If you get it figured out what area the problem is in please post it. I took it to radio shop and of course, it worked fine then.

a lot of the solder problems I have found are in the VCO, audio IC and PLL area. some joints have been bad under the small shield that is soldered on the top side of the board. I would look close for a piece of solder floating around on the board that makes contact at times.

Thanks. I will look it over very carefully under magnifying lamp and see what I can find. Btw, does anyone know if the DX94's are supposed to have Starlite illuminathion?

Took it to the shop this morning and I'm suppose to hear from my Tech tomorrow see if he finds anything, I've looked that radio of mine over 20 times with a magnifine glass and i couldn't find nothing (no cold joints- nothing) but that don't mean there's not one.....I'll keep everyone posted on the Tech's findings as soon as i hear from him tomorrow.."I took it to the shop last week and of course, it worked fine then"...After extensively searching I have learned this must not a common problem, unless it is a cold soldor joint somewhere...I hope and pray that's all it is. To much money invested LOL......Thanks guys I'll keep you updated..
