In need of a new setup

I am on the market for a full new setup. Right now I am using a Uniden PC33. I am looking at the President McKinley SSB or the Uniden 980 SSB or i am open to suggestions. The things i'm looking for on a radio is ssb and noaa. And i need a recommendation for antenna as well.

The antenna i'm looking at is the Stryker SR-A10.

I have a President McKinley, and although they are a bit on the "pricey" side...they are worth every penny...

Very stable ssb, and loaded with features...most likely will not be replacing it anytime soon...

As for the SR A10 antenna...never had one, so can't commit on it.

I've heard the Stryker antenna are solid but I've never even seen one. I'm running a Wilson 5000 on my truck and really happy with that.
Antenna is important. Whatever you do. Don't go cheap on the antenna. If you don't have to cover a lot of watts, the LiL-Will is good too.
For the mobile antenna. A lot has to do with were you can mount it and how high it can stick up. You can have a great antenna but if you mount it low like on the bumper and it isn't very tall, it won't work well. If you can roof mount an antenna. It will work well even at the shorter heights.

The antenna is going on the trunk lid of my crown vic. I dont like drilling holes or running the wire thru the door as my 3 year old likes to pull on it. I think the A10 should do the job well it is a 62in and should get out around 5 to 8 miles.

I looked up that antenna and it is impressive. 10,000 watt capacity. WOW
Should be a rockin setup.

nothing at all, it's mostly a sales pitch...I can almost guarantee if you tried to run half that amount of watts through that antenna it would not only fry the antenna, but your radio too!

May want to look at the Sirio brand antenna's while your at it...I know several who have them, and swear by them...

Personally I'm not a fan of base-loaded antennas, but if I had to go with one, it would be the Sirio Performer 5000...

Since you aren't into drilling a hole a trunk mount will be the next best thing. Right now the Wilson (5000) antenna are "iffy", they are back to having a leak (water) problem with the load. The Stryker I have heard good things about with the couple of locals running them. My choice is definitely the Sirio, they have a longer whip (longest is the 5000), the load is solid (no leaks inside), and you can order the trunk mount with a decent RG8X coax.
Check out the forum sponsors for the best prices, DNJ sells Sirio and either GI Joe's or CB World has the radio. Might want to check out the Anytone AT-6666, it's available through 88 Radio,,, lol,, and yes I'm doing a sales pitch.

Didn't know about that problem about the newer Wilson's. Too bad. I pretty well agree on the base loaded antenna not being the best. My W5k is the highest thing on my truck so it works pretty well. My jeep has a 7' top loaded firestick mounted above the tail light so 7/10ths of it is above any other metal. That has noticeably better ears than my truck.
