Uniden 520xl help

#395353

Post by Jr750 »

Hello everyone,
Just picked up a new Uniden pro520xl.
Been looking around for some info on installing an echo board on this radio, I have put them in a Cobra 29 & 25 Wich was pretty simple to do, but the 520 has this board, not as easy as just cutting wires. Keep in mind I'm just a truck driver who likes to have fun with my radios, no tech here. I would really appreciate if you guys could point me in the direction to where I can get my info. Thanks to All.

Your best bet is to find a microphone that has "Echo,, Echo,, Echo,, Echo,, Echo" built in, it's no hazel and can be moved when you upgrade to another radio. The RF Limited Extreme 2018 Mic is a good choice, check out the forum sponsors.

Yep that's what I did when I was using a 520...just got a RF Limited Extreme 2018 Mic...Things have better echo features than most radios that come from the factory with echo...doubt you'll find any info on mounting a echo board in that radio with SMT...just not allot you can so with those boards.

I posted a reply I don't know where it went, but anyway I do not want a mic, not interested in the mic, just want to find the info in connecting this board into the 520. I know Clay's radio can not be the only person on this planet that knows how to do it.

Oh, your original post didn't state you had a board already. Okay, need a little more info on which echo board you have.

There isn't any specific instructions for your radio and as the instructions that came with the echo board are pretty explanatory. J4 is the power, red and black. The tricky part is the white and red audio leads, since the radio doesn't have a "Mic Gain" control you have to wire these to the mic jack but I think that is tied to a small PCB. Here you need to remove the jack, unsolder and lift the tab going to the board and solder the white lead to it and then the red lead to the unsoldered spot. Then you need to drill a hole in the chassis and cover for the control pot. I would ad a few ferrite beads on the audio leads to reduce any RF feedback on them.

Ok, thanks for the help guys, got the audio wire info I was looking for from someone who has installed one before in a 520. So I will start my second project.

I do have 1 more question,
when the stock mic is switched out for a astatic noise-cancelling mic on the Uniden 520 I noticed a modulation loss, will the gain on the echo board make up for loss of modulation? This is a New 2018 model radio.

When using a noise cancelling mic your lips have to be almost against the screen for the modulation to be right. The echo board will add some gain by adjusting the pot that has "103" on it.

the stock mic on these little radios are electret mics and are designed to increase modulation. when you change out the mic for any other mic you will lose some of the audio.
