Old Palomar Elite 500 W/ Power supply

#398341

Post by FarmeroBrown »

I had bought a few items a few yrs ago and got this Combo as some have called it. I don't know what finals it has, but does anyone know how much to drive it with? It seems of great quality. W/4 watts drive it's swinging about 290 on High. The fan is so quiet and man it is solid built.

Here's what i dug up on the 500 watt combo base amp:

"This is a 500 Watt Base Palomar Amplifier. Works on 110 A/C, just plug it in to the wall and talk. Mossfet transistors provide the very best modulation. No power supply needed. Also serves as a 35 amp power supply for your radio. You don't need a separate power supply for your mobile radio."
- 14 Mosfett Transistors: 2 x 12.
- 500 watts PEP
- Pre-amplifier to amplify receive
- Works on AM/FM/CW
- On/Off switch
- On/Off LED indicator light
- Dimensions are L16" x H6" x W14"

4 watts is all I'd drive it with, so do the math,, 4x70w =280w,, what your getting out of it is right. It was made to run a low watt AM radio on the PS.

Thank you Mr Beachbum,

Yes mine came with a 1997 receipt, It's probably the 1446's so I probably need to keep the drive DK around 4 watts or maybe just under. Again, thank you for being able to find info that I couldn't.

I can remember these things well when they came out, just never ran one.

Have a great afternoon/evening.

Thanks Mr 321,

It all makes sence, man this thing is quiet compared to the fan on that Fat Boy, But it blows a lot of air too. 4 watts is what I'll drive with or maybe a little less since it's got a little age on it. Oh and it says Auto SSB--fancy lol

All the best #s to you

You can run a SSB mobile, an unmodded Cobra 148GTL (or similar) only draws about 4 amps, maybe 5 is the modulation is turned up, that would leave 30 amps for the amplifier section, personally I run a separate PS for the radio.

I've had mine since it was new and it's sill up and running right now. Mine has four MRF455 in it. I see about 400-450 PEP from my 2 watt dead key cobra 148 that swings about 18-20. It's been rock solid except i had the preamps relayed cleaned up and and it works again. All in all its been a great box over the last 30+ years. Enjoy!

Mr HackSaw,

That's great to hear, seems it's been and still is a great piece of equipment for you. Seems that one of my Grays has those 455s in it and man it's a strong talker. Hey, I've got a President Grant somewhere that should get the job done, thanks for the input.

Hello Mr FarmerBrown, I think you'll have a great combination! I love the mfr455, Every amp I own including a single mrf455 in a tiny box called a "antlafier", to my old palomar and galaxy amps. they seems to just work! I hope you get on the air and enjoy the fun with it!
