Mighty Magnum 3
I have a mighty magnum 3 base antenna made by the antenna specialists company. I believe it is a 23 channel model as it looks like it was made in the early 70s from the dates on the paperwork. It has the diamond shaped top hat. I’m curious how far off on SWR this will be on 40 channels? Any ideas anyone? Well I be able to use this on 40 channels?

Hello Stingray and welcome back to the forum. Those old Antenna Specialist antennas were narrow banded because of the capacitance tuning load they used but I'm pretty sure you can do the CB band and a little bit more off either end. I believe the top section was used to tune the length. I would build it on the ground first (stepladder, mast, etc.) to adjust the SWR, should make much difference after putting it up in the air. Adjust the center of the band for the lowest SWR and then adjust it to balance out the ends.
I looked at the ad for your antenna in an old S9 magazine, nice.

Thanks for the reply. So even if it was made for 23 channels from the factory, it should have enough adjustment room to make it cover 40?

Re: Mighty Magnum 3
Yes it should have pretty of adjustment. Get the SWR low on channel 19 or 20 if you only plan on the CB band. My main channel is 38 (LSB) so if it was mine, I'd make my adjustment for there.
It's nice to have the instructions that came with the antenna, makes building it a lot easier. Is there is any way you can post the instructions on the forum I will forward them to CB Tricks for his website.

NOS Mighty Magnum 3 by Antenna Specialists is up and running. Seems to be working well. SWR below 1.5 over the band.

Re: Mighty Magnum 3
I hope the chimney straps hold up!
Does anyone here have any opinions if a super penetrator could be mounted with chimney straps?

Re: Mighty Magnum 3
Your chimney looks fairly new and hefty so it in itself will be okay. The straps are concerning, luckily they will bend before breaking so you should lose the antenna. If it should happen you could use 2 strips of angle iron, drill holes for the mast clamps and use the strap hardware to mount it to the chimney or drill and use anchors in the brick. The other alternative is to run the mast (or tower) from the ground up.
I don't think the HyGain SPT500 would be any more wind load than the Mighty Magnum III you have now.
