Butchery of the phonetic alphabet?

Hello all! Is there some variance of the standard phonetic alphabet? I do a lot of listening to all the bands and I also enjoy watching YouTube videos of other radio nerds like myself. One thing I have been noticing is people using odd words in the phonetic alphabet. For example, the letter A (Alpha) I hear some say (America) and for S (Sierra) I hear some say (Sugar) while others totally make it up as they go lol. Another example, someone spelling out their state name of Utah which should be Uniform Tango Alpha Hotel but instead they say something like Umbrella Taco America Harry lol! I'm like, say whaaaaat!?!??? Some of these guys are US general class operators talking to other US operators. I guess I'm getting old and don't understand, but I just don't get how someone can go through the process of studying and passing the tech, then general ham exam but can't lean or take the time to learn the phonetic alphabet lol. Just to be a smart **Censored** I should start using words with silent first letters lol. Anyhow, that was my rant for today. Catch ya later.

When I was learning it I would keep a cheat sheet my in my car. I would spell out licence plates, street names, and pretty much any road signs. Made boring trips almost fun lol.
