New Radio Time, Which One Should I Buy? Stryker or Galaxy??

#407291

Post by Bug »

I need a new radio and have been thinking of buying a Galaxy DX-98VHP or a Stryker 955HPC. I had a Galaxy 94HP that I really enjoyed but unfortunately it was destroyed in Hurricane Laura. The 94HP has been sold out everywhere and I have been looking hard at the Stryker but the Galaxy 98 would pack a little more punch. Any thoughts or opinions on which one and why?

I went with the Stryker 955 because I had heard the galaxy is drifty on SSB . Turns out so is the Stryker but it's not so bad if you let it warm up alittle. Very nice looking radio and very loud on am.

I would go with the Stryker too, the Galaxy would be okay if you plan only AM, like said, SSB drifts and Galaxy has never tried to solve the problem. If you are looking there are others. I personally like the Anytone AT-6666, a lot smaller than the Stryker and packs the same punch, plus the conversion is menu driven, no opening the radio except to turn the AM power down if needed. I have a AT-5555N on the way to try out, conversion is a solder bridge.

Thank you 295 antenna, I appreciate the input!

And thank you Greg, as always I appreciate your input and advice! I remeber talking to you when I got the Galaxy 94 to set up in my Dodge Charger... Now I have a 2015 GMC Terrain and need a new radio to put in it, lol. And yeah, I've been looking real hard at that Stryker.... I like Galaxy but I might have to end up going with the Stryker this time around, I have heard good things about them and now I'm itching to try one out, lol!

I'm not crazy about any of the exports. In fact, the legal Galaxies have the same problem with drifting. It is noticeable and annoying on Sideband. You won't notice it on AM.

To cure this problem Crazy Glue a 100 ohm half watt resistor against the PLL/VCO crystal. Attach one end of the resistor to the 8 volt source and the other side to chassis ground. Any IF can will be fine.

The case of the radio is not at chassis ground. The case is at antenna ground. 8 volts divided by 100 ohms will allow .080 amperes to flow and heat up the resistor and keep the drifting to a minimum. The current (.080) is 8/10th of an ampere. The watts will be .08 amps x 8 volts = .64 watts. If that is not enough heat one may decrease the resistance to 47 ohms for 1.36 watts. I wouldn't go any less than 47 ohms. You don't want to load down the 8 volt regulated circuit.
Respectfully as always,

Rick

Ok guys, I ended up buying the Stryker 955 and could not be more impressed with it! I was a Galaxy fan at one time but man, the audio on these strykers is just so much better. SSB audio sounds almost like AM, not to mention that the unit that I purchased has not drifted at all. It has many features that Galaxy doesn't have and everything works great! Started talking skip right off the bat too! I'm now a Stryker fan, lol! Thanks for all the input everyone, it is appreciated! Happy to be back on the air!!

Good choice, it is a big radio, glad you had room for it. They are usually pretty good right out of the box, maybe a tweak of the modulation but I would leave the output alone. Good SWR is needed for these new mosfet radios and don't try to use all the bands on a short antenna, those fets will pop.

Thank you Greg. I got it from a local shop here in San Antonio, Tx. and had a simple tune and alignment done, he doesn't believe in doing crazy mods or turning output to max and refuses to do work like that. Low carrier is 3 with an average of 20, high is 25 with an average of 38 and peak is 70 with modulation. Clean, clear and punchy. And SWR is 1.1 to 1 to 1.2 to 1..... No swr issues at all like I had with that galaxy 94, I'm a happy camper, lol.
